They really don't realise how ridiculous they look to the outside world (and even mainland Britain).

The population of Belfast is split roughly 50/50 Unionist/Nationalist. Flags have become very divisive symbols, especially the Union flag and the Irish tricolour.

Belfast City Hall is a neutral building, supposedly welcoming to all visitors (it really is a beautiful building, well worth a visit). So a number of Nationalist Councillors highlighted that the Union flag being prominently displayed on the building was not particularly welcoming for Nationalists/Catholics.

The Council therefore debated the issue. Several proposals were suggested including

- removal of the flag completely
- displaying both flags, side by side
- displaying a different flag e.g. the Ulster flag
- displaying the Union flag, but only on designated days e.g. Royal birthdays, weddings etc.

After much debate and a DEMOCRATIC vote, it was decided that the Union flag would continue to be displayed, but only on certain designated days.

Now if you have read this and got this far you will agree that it sounds perfectly civilised and straight-forward. Democracy finally at work in Northern Ireland. But no. Unionists don't like this decision so they've embarked on their usual response. Cause mayhem, wreck the place, issue death threats to Politicians they don't like and generally attempt to impose Britishness on the Irish people by whatever means necessary.

To any English, Scottish or Welsh people on this forum, do you really think these thugs are a good representation of Britishness?

Why do you think the person calling you "narrow minded" is a rabid Unionist?

Just because because you are only capable of having extreme views doesn't that anyone objecting to your supidity is supporting an opposite extreme view.

In N Ireland there are less than 5% rabid unionists and a similar number of rabid nationalists both of these groups are equally wrong.

Perhaps they need to take a leaf out of Britain's book, by having to except a multi cultural society, with every religion, & culture having equal rights. Seems they want to live in the dark ages.

Flags? What on earth do they mean? Not a lot. No different to people waving different coloured football scarfs...Sounds a bit like a racist attitude & indeed not far away from it.

There's nothing wrong with the Queen's English, although she might want to correct your spelling of 'whilst' in your post above.

Let me fll in the missing word in the sentence you chose to misunderstand:

Just because because you are only capable of having extreme views doesn't mean that anyone objecting to your supidity is supporting an opposite extreme view.

Make sense now?

The reason I was and am upset is the language you are using, the word "proddies" and calling the country Northern IRAland.

As well as being an upset Irishwoman I am a proud one and am am not a rabid Unionist as you called me. I do everything I can to help reconcile differences and would have had a similar reaction if you used similar slang to describe someone whose religion was Catholic.

Note to JK, If this subject was about Pakistan would "In the Know" be allowed to call that countries residents Pakis?

Note to David - Thank you for your support and understanding. It's always helpful to have an ally when dealing with a bully.

Is there an echo in here?

If you remember the series Bread - the family regularly called them "proddies" which seems particularly apt for the vein-popping rabid Unionists that we regularly see on the News - with their stupid flags and silly sashes.

As for IRAland ... I mentioned in another post that the "six counties" are not / never were / and never will be attached to the UK but are clearly a part of Ireland.

The sooner you people accept that the better (after all, history shows that the freedom fighters ALWAYS win - (Sandinistas / Viet Cong / ANC / IRA and Arab Spring)

Maybe we are about to find out the full story of the collusion (in murders) between the "loyalists" and the security forces?

news.sky.com/story/1024025/finucane-murd...-due-to-be-published

Is that a flying pig, I see ?

The report finds "astonishing" areas of collusion between the Army and the security services ... in fact 2 special agenst were involved in the murder plans, BUT says the government (of the day) did not know what was going on, and did not collude.

This is exactly why we should have full scrutiny of the security services and never let them hide behind the "national security" banner.

The Finucane team made an error of strategy in their response to the PM's statement. If you genuinely want the State to hold an inquiry, don't make it so abundantly clear that you regard that State with contempt and are convinced that it is incapable of delivering what you want.

This is incorrect - they have been an integral part of the UK/British Empire for centuries.
