They really don't realise how ridiculous they look to the outside world (and even mainland Britain).
The population of Belfast is split roughly 50/50 Unionist/Nationalist. Flags have become very divisive symbols, especially the Union flag and the Irish tricolour.
Belfast City Hall is a neutral building, supposedly welcoming to all visitors (it really is a beautiful building, well worth a visit). So a number of Nationalist Councillors highlighted that the Union flag being prominently displayed on the building was not particularly welcoming for Nationalists/Catholics.
The Council therefore debated the issue. Several proposals were suggested including
- removal of the flag completely
- displaying both flags, side by side
- displaying a different flag e.g. the Ulster flag
- displaying the Union flag, but only on designated days e.g. Royal birthdays, weddings etc.
After much debate and a DEMOCRATIC vote, it was decided that the Union flag would continue to be displayed, but only on certain designated days.
Now if you have read this and got this far you will agree that it sounds perfectly civilised and straight-forward. Democracy finally at work in Northern Ireland. But no. Unionists don't like this decision so they've embarked on their usual response. Cause mayhem, wreck the place, issue death threats to Politicians they don't like and generally attempt to impose Britishness on the Irish people by whatever means necessary.
To any English, Scottish or Welsh people on this forum, do you really think these thugs are a good representation of Britishness?
