Really, once you accept the basic loony premise (there is a God with long white beard whose son... etc etc) and then go down the belief route, you're into sheer insanity... civil partnerships OK as long as they don't have sex, never did have sex or regret it.

Bonkers. Lucifer must be howling with laughter.

One thing I don't get about the Church of England (quite beside their attitude to gayboys like me) is the way they go n and on about marriage and so called family values.

Hang on, wasn't it the CofE that come into being specifcally in order to facilitate Divorce, i.e. that of Henry VIII?

Yes it was, david.

Proddy-ism was also supposed to get rid of the "trappings" of the Church all ostentation etc (which is why proddy churches are so grim) - but the Archbishop and his cronies wear even brighter and more gayly coloured frocks than ever !

I'm reminded that Not The Nine 0'Clock News had the C of E's allegedly "modernising" attitudes well sussed way back in the 80s. For all the flim flam and all the PR spouted, their belief is clearly the same - "God's like that... he hates poofs".

Where has the desire ever been expressed anywhere that straight Anglican bishops should remain celibate? If the celibacy requirement is there because a bishop should be "married" to the church, it must surely apply to all clergy regardless of sexuality. If it's there because - as I suspect - homosexual acts are repugnant to the Church of England then that should be made very clear so the Church can have both its motives and Established status examined and questioned. I may be accused of semantics, but I'd argue that I appear not to be alone.

One thing I do know. Were any other "employer" to attempt to enforce conditions such as these on any of its "employees" they would be hauled before a tribunal in pretty short order.

Clearly the C of E believes it has the right to make its own rules. But what is equally clear - to me at least - is that if those rules differ so fundamentally from what we would as a society normally expect, the C of E should have its Established status seriously questioned at the very least. Or - as it appears to not wish to operate according to the same mores {or even, it would appear, the same legislation} as the society whose patronage it has enjoyed since its inception - its Established position should - quickly - be removed entirely.

Yes, quite ludicrous ... esp as the Monarch is "head of the church". The same Monarch who has presided over ALL here own children getting divorced (except one - so far) and who forced her own sister (Princess Margaret) to abandon true love and marry someone else in order to produce the heir and spare. She was so unhappy she drank herself to death.
