The Olympic legacy ..... LOL !!!!! 12 Years, 6 Months ago
Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield (where Jessica Ennis trains) may be closed down to save money for the (loony) Council.

The stadium was built in 1991 for the World Student Games (whatever they are !) at a total cost (only revealed in 2011) of £658,000,000 !

Even after closure the Council will STILL be paying £25 million a year TILL 2024 for a stadium that has been demolished !!!!

This is total Labour lunacy ...

Rubbish.

The stadium was opened in 1990 - and built at a cost of £29m.

Total cost of all World Student Games venues (ALL still being paid for !) plus staging costs £658,000,000 (see BBC link above).

Don Valley Stadium cost £29million to build plus £25 million a year (till 2024) in interest payments and running costs.

The scheme was launched by loony Labour and the true costs revealed by the LibDems.

===

THE final bill to Sheffield taxpayers from the World Student Games 20 years ago will be an “eyewatering” £650 million and won’t be paid off for another 13 years, The Star can reveal.

Less than half the debt - £296m - has been repaid so far and annual repayments of up to £30m will continue to eat into Sheffield Council’s budget until 2024.

The total, which increased dramatically through refinancing processes, is more than four times the original £147m cost of building venues for the 1991 Games.

Again, factually incorrect.

The £25m covers a lot more than just the stadium!

Absolutely correct (according to the local paper, The Star and the BBC) but if you knew better you wouldn't have to backtrack with every subsequent post, would you?

I said that Don Valley Stadium was built for the World Student Games which cost 650 million - which it did.

I said that even after demolition of the stadium the Council will still be paying 25 million a year (until 2024) in interest charges / refinancing etc - which it will.

What the report actually says is
"Don Valley stadium opened in 1991 for the World Student Games in Sheffield at a cost of £29m"
"Sheffield City Council could save £500,000 per year if the Don Valley Stadium was to close"

ITK is such a hypocrite. When is comes to others twisting the truth they are quick to point it out. Here it's not even twisting the truth it's telling a lie to make a point. The stadium cost £29m.

LOL ! Yet another "new" poster (all with remarkably similar IP addresses, one bets) !

Distort the facts as much as you want, but Sheffield Council will STILL be paying £25 MILLION a YEAR TILL 2024 even AFTER Don Valley has closed.

Another good deal from loony Labour !

1. "small stadium" ?
The BIGGEST (25,000 capacity) athletics venue in the UK prior to the Olympic stadium (isnt Crystal Palace about 18000 seats?)

2. Wasn't the Olympic "legacy" supposed to bring sport for all (as opposed to closing stadiums - within months - and debt for all?)

3. Doesn't Sheffield claim to be Britain's "City of Sport" ???

Wrong again, ITK.

The City of Manchester Stadium was built in 2002 with a 38,000 capacity.

Why not ask ITK about inventing opinion polls?

No ITK, it doesn't.

If you google 'City of Sport' for the UK, you'll see Glasgow, Preston and London - not Sheffield which is called 'City of Sanctuary' because of its favourable treatment of refugees and imigrants.
