People would not use mobility scooters unless they had to. Walking around is one of life's great pleasures - but, if you can't - the scooters fulfil the need to get out in the fresh air and community.
In addition, they provide independence whereas wheelchairs usually do not.
Not long ago, disabled/imobile people would be unable to leave their houses - and had to rely on friends and neighbours to do their shopping etc. Now, many shops and malls cater for scooters and - for example, Wetherspoons (the UK's largest pub chain) and others - allow users in, on their scooters, to eat and drink.
Also, most football/sports clubs have designated areas and facilities for scooter users - many of whom are in their teens.
To say, users want to hit pedestrians and give abuse is silly; they just want to go about their daily chores and leisure activities like the able-bodied.

One question ITK. If you or any of your family become unable to walk - would you/they use a mobility scooter, or continue to laugh at them (LOL) - and still think thin/lazy/estate people should only use them?

But, that is the POINT of them!
A high percentage of users can walk - for short distances, but need help to get where they want.
Outside shops, restaurants and pubs, you will often see parked up scooters. With the users inside enjoying themselves in the knowledge that they can get home easily.
I note you ignored my quesion about your (and your family's) potential usage....

Ignore the athritis and gangrenous leg !
All below from The Guardian (your favourite socialist rag) Hedda-tas ! -
But as they have become more popular, mobility scooters have become more controversial. Although the main growth in the market is the consequence of an ageing population, there is evidence that people with no disabilities are beginning to buy the scooters on the secondhand market (where they can cost as little as £100) because, with no tax, licence or insurance requirements, they provide a cheap alternative to cars for getting around town, particularly at a time of rising petrol prices.
There has been a marked change in the way people use them. A decade ago these were products used only by very frail people; now manufacturers are designing new models with bench seats capable of carrying people up to 40st. "It's a cultural issue. People are larger and, dare I say it, lazier," an industry spokesman says (before deciding that he doesn't dare say it, and asking for his name not to be put to the quote). " People are using them as a mode of transport rather than public transport or a car."

She has received emails from 200 people hit by mobility scooters since she started her campaign in October.
MPs have previously considered introducing a fit-to-drive test.
A coroner criticised the "serious lack" of regulations after a 90-year-old woman was knocked down on an Isle of Wight pavement and killed in 2009.

So there we have it, Hedda .... the dolers are using them instead of cars, no need for a license or tax, park them anywhere and get FATTER all at the same time !
Fortunately all this idleness WILL shorten their lives.
