The horse meat scandal... 12 Years, 5 Months ago
This is all quite beyond me; yes, if sausages contained rat instead of pork, I'd freak out. But horse instead of cow? It's like duck instead of chicken. Who cares?

I quite agree JK.

When you think about it, they've probably been using horse meat for years & nobody even noticed, or really cared until they were told.

It's almost like someone is being paid to make a news story & consider (I know we wouldn't eat it) but lots of cat & dog foods, have always been made from horses.

Though your point about sausages JK (& I have worked in a Sausage factory)is loosely based. The amount of actual meat in a sausage is very little, whether it be pork, beef or horse! Most are packed out with rusk & fats & if you see how they were made, you wouldn't touch them. High salt content & padded out stuff, that no one needs.

The front page today said it all - abbatoir workers photographs. What a crime it must be to carve up horses. Nothing like doing it to cows, sheep, pigs or chickens. That's alright!

perhaps horse meat is no different but there is the deception angle..I mean if you buy one thing and are sold something else....but

what puzzles me is that surely cattle are easier and quicker to breed than horses ??

I mean you don't see vast hordes of horses being raised across Europe do you ?

Not a delicacy, just a cheap alternative i think.
It isn't really about which meat it is, but fraud, and safety issues from meat unfit for human consumption, and religious issues, because horse is forbidden in Jewish culture.

Yes, its simply FRAUD.
If you buy beef and get horsemeat (because its cheaper) - how long before they replace horsemeat with something cheaper still? Like dog for instance.

There is also a considerable health implication. Animals are given different drugs - for different results - and these crooks dont care at all who they poison as long as they make a decent profit.

How long before we have (yet another) disease as a result of tampering with food?

Mad Cow / e-coli / salmonella / listeria / BSE ... the list just goes on and on ....

Don't believe the hype, ITK.

Remember Edwina Currie & her eggs? Bollocks mate, total bollocks. More money to sell newspapers. It's called scare mongery & (on dogs) well certain cultures eat them, anyway. Considered the same as pigs, in certain parts of western society.

Soon you'll be told, you shouldn't be eating anything.

I don't ..... its the never ending list of new food diseases that I believe !

In my geneology research I've seen hundreds od death certificates and parish death entries (over centuries) - yet never seen one yet where cause of death was food poisoning. Strange that? - when there was no refrigeration, you'd expect it to feature somewhere?

But, no - its the MadFarmers with their expanding range of drugs and pest control agents that are killing us all !

The grand nation will have to be taken off screen in case you are further traumatised.

I think it is the Telegraph that has it pretty summed-up well ... if you are Tesco Trash or Pound Shop Scum dont expect prime fillet beef for a few pence (no matter what is says on the tin !!!!)

But it isn't just the cheaper shops or products that are affected is it?
I think you could probably hide anything in a ready meal that is heavily laced with garlic and salt.
