Probably because you have to pay a licence just to have a tv in your house...

They don't - the vast majority loves the BBC and thinks the licence fee is real value for money; but both Murdoch and the Mail group HATE it for that reason (a huge advantage for the BBC, not having to make profits to exist).

They campaign hour after hour to bring it down. I used to refuse on The Sun - my most obvious time was when I stood up for Michael Hurll after the Noel Edmonds stunt death incident.

Credit where due; no pressure was ever put onto me to toe the line.

Sky encourage people to hate it. All of Murdoch's media outlets encourage the hate. The Daily Mail ought to embrace it but instead has an absurdly obsessive agenda against it. It's quite an achievement to make so many people moan about the licence fee, whilst happily paying about £70 a month to subsidise hundreds of crap channels just so they can watch some sport (which should be on terrestrial channels anyway) and the odd movie (which they could watch in a far more cost-effective way via specialist online providers). If people genuinely think that's simple free choice rather than cynical exploitation they probably deserve being fleeced, but the BBC is one of the most admirable public institutions this country has ever produced.

It's obvious. Being forced to pay for something you might not want. Someone said to me that BBC haters are idiots as everytime they buy a 'mars bar' they pay for three/four/five. Well, YES. But they cannot enjoy these 'paid for' stations without paying for BBC first.

I'm not a BBC hater. I'm a being held to random hater. Make BBC a subscription service. To quote ITV key revenue. Simples.

No. This is what some people keep misunderstanding. The whole point of the BBC was to bring culture, in its broadest sense, to the whole population, including those who'd otherwise be priced out, or discouraged socially, from experiencing it. That's literally what 'broadcasting' means. Subscription channels are for a self-nominated and self-perpetuating elite. Public service broadcasting isn't a difficult concept but it's almost as if parts of the Establishment don't want people to understand it, let alone appreciate it.

I love this sort of thing. You never hear people build on the logic and say, 'Let those who want to fund unjust wars pay for it - don't tax us all', but when it comes to the BBC suddenly everyone wants to tell the Government to go elsewhere. What great values!

we pay for heaps of things we do not use...roads, hospitals, bridges, airports, buses, trains etc etc...

we don't use every facility we pay for..couldn't possibly in a lifetime.

Indeed we pay for commercial TV stations as well even if we don't watch them' The price of advertising your Toyota (even my pre-loved Jag !! ) is built into the price but you may never see the advert even though you pay for it.

BBC is good value even in it's diminished state !!

(the good news is poor old ITK pays for all these things as well...and horses for the scroungers )

Tripe. Include the tv licence fee in my tax like the NHS or wars and I'll pay for it as I do those. As it is I can't afford extra luxuries which to some extent are optional. Thus this 'public service' broadcasting you all talk of?

I don't have it. I don't have a TV. Because it's an expense I don't need. Not really a public service is it? According to some views on here I'd be a better person if I had access to tv. But I don't. Might as well just quit society.

P.S. I would not want to pay a separate tax for wars either. How the Government spends Money is unrelated to a tax on access to something I've already paid for.

I think it's good value for the entertainment provided but I doubt anyone thinks you will be a "better person if I had access to tv" for if that were the case, ITK wouldn't be so thick...he has one just to see what the weather will be like in half an hour, the poor thing.
