The public agree with me, Hedda-tas ! 12 Years, 4 Months ago
Newsnight - main item - attitudes hardening against the scroungers who won't work.

Of course attitudes are hardening.
we have been brainwashed in a similar way to the Savile fiasco, whipped into a frenzy of outrage about a woman with eleven children a parrot a carousel and a flaming horse, and not stopping to wonder why we are funding other people's children to go to nursery, which is not so different.

Obviously it is morally wrong to claim benefits unless they are genuinely needed but there is no need to demonise the vast majority who have done nothing wrong.

This church report about poverty is interesting.
It is terribly long winded but worth looking at the "myths" section...... www.jointpublicissues.org.uk/wp-content/...s-Report-smaller.pdf

The public has always tended to be against government waste of all types.
As mentioned earlier when the public press and government generate extra publicity then I would expect a rise in public awareness of the issue as a result.
interesting point to note though is that in 1983 when I left my very sheltered private girl's school and got a job working for the job centre we were instructed to move as many unemployed off the dole, and onto long term sickness benefits. This was to massage unemployment figures under the dark days of Tory unemployment.
Wonder which party is generating all the hype against benefit users now?

Perhaps you should look around a Council estaate and see how many curtains are drawn (shut) at 3 in the afternoon?

They dont seem to be queuing at the JobCentre - not much evidence that they want jobs ?

I think I will give prowling around looking in windows a miss thanks.

You cant tell by curtains. They might work night shifts or or be unwell or not want the Picasso to fade.
My curtains are shut at the moment and apart from child benefit none of us have ever claimed a penny.

The problem is here the Tories actively encouraged a generation of benefit 'scroungers' to help massage their disastrous economic policies of the 80s/90s.Now after creating the mess they want to shift the blame back onto the very people they encouraged in the first place!

Please explain how any decision 30 years ago has lead to a whole breed of idle, uneducated not-fit-for-anything layabouts today ?

Did we force them to leave school virtually illiterate?

Did we force them to communicate in monosyllabic grunts - so they would never pass an interview?

There are more people in work today than ever before - some of them "got it right" ... but then again some of them made an effort !

the right doesn't want educated masses and loves spouting simple solutions to problems that are decades in the making.

I live on a council estate ITK curtains are not closed around here all day everyday the curtains that are closed throughout day don't have nets people don't want ITK or any other delinquent looking in their flats.

Our local Jobcentre is always packed people looking for work. The thing is ITK the Jobcentre people don't find you work you have to do the leg work they just sign paper to say you signed on today, most people who go to the Jobcentre also are the ones who are on the work programme and just handing their sheets in.

ITK please visit a Jobcentre and you know how it works it might be exciting when you go someone kicks off when they fuck up his/her payment.
