A fallen superpower distracts itself with the past

History so pervades the United Kingdom that its citizens can't focus on the present - just look at the debate over Margaret Thatcher's tenure in the 80s, writes Tom Wright.

Was there ever a nation so wrapped up in its past as Britain? Posher Brits love recounting family lineages and dressing up like Edwardian tweed salespeople (ITK probably); everyone, it seems, is royal somewhere along the line and history confers some mysterious dignity. (hedda)...

I suppose there are plenty of countries who either don't have enough of a past, or have one but are so ashamed of it they do their best to forget it.
