Pirate radio... satellite TV... internet...

These three massive changes in mass communication - someone should do a TV show examining the three revolutions.

- Pirate radio = non BBC official playlist, direct marketing of new releases to 'pop' stations, young demographic specific output, unregulated formats

- Satallite TV = non UK specific output, tailored output for music, news, films, shopping channels etc, the birth of rolling 24 hr news

- Internet = global reach communications in your own home, reduced costs of communications by the individual, video communications, e-commerce, ability to by-pass traditional monopoly telephone companies

....when you look at it like that, what have the Romans really done for us?

I would substitute the mobile phone for the first - being able to talk to anyone in the world from anywhere, anytime, is somewhat awesome.....

Don't agree that pirate radio is a big enough new development to be in that list but think the Top 3 should include the mobile phone and/or smart phone/tablet devise

Oh Blue Boy, you're clearly not as old as me! Pirate radio truly took us by the scruff of our necks and changed everything.

I'm really talking mass entertainment in communication; entertaining though phones may be they are more one to one.

Yes JK, not as old as you but I still don't think pirate radio touched enough people to be on that list and the impact was 20 years earlier than the other two.

You are very wrong about smart phones. Maybe it's your age but mobile technology is not restricted to 1 to 1 communication and the uses continue to increase daily.

You are correct on both points.

A good example of 'specially for the web' is the recent/excellent House of Cards political drama series - with Kevin Spacey, based in Washington.

This is made by Netflix and available there, and on streaming sites.

I think you can assume internet includes smart phones. It is mainly the web/internet that is facilitating mass communication on mobiles.

Just the same way as the much earlier invention of the radio facilitated the introduction of pirate radio? Or the invention of the vinyl record facilitated the job of the DJ on pirate radio?

Mobile devises do a multitude of things, the internet is just (one of) the content delivery systems.
