TOPIC: The Christmas No 1
#103943

The Christmas No 1 11 Years, 7 Months ago
"Oh Come All Ye Faithful" by Susan Boyle and Elvis Presley.

Has everything (esp the schmaltz !) that the masses want from a Christmas single.

An obvious contender with already tiny odds - I reckon people might be surprised by a total outsider (about to be featured in a massive TV commercial campaign)... Fattie Bum Bum by Carl Malcolm.

Just put £10 on Boyle/Elvis at 8-1 and Carl Malcolm at 20-1 with William Hill. Hope Fattie Bum Bum is Number One - I'll make £200!

No, they are still here, Pru

Just one performance on "Surprise, Surprise" (televisual diarrhoea) and its will sell bucket-loads.

Wish you'd make up your mind, you contrary chap, you spent ages in another thread informing people that the mass had been irrevocably broken up:

There are far too many alternatives these days. When I was that age there was the pub (which you tried to get into but usually couldnt) and the cinema - nothing else.

These days young people (and families) have far more to spend their time and money on - the internet / mobile phones / skating / bowling / video games / DVDs / etc etc - PLUS they still have the pub and the cinema too.

People just don't buy singles in any great numbers now,not even sure how they calculate the charts now.

Not quite true Patt; they download a lot; admittedly very cheaply (79p or 99p) and a tiny percentage compared to those stolen online illegally, but actual quantity of sales of singles are as big as ever. Albums? No; but in America it's starting (our Rocky Horror Show original soundtrack sells huge amounts in the USA). My hope is that "collections" could spearhead a boom in sales over here... download our UK Records collection and you get 80 terrific hits and tracks from the 60s and 70s - that's over 4 hours of terrific nostagia; perfect for your Xmas or New Year party (and birthday if you happen to have been born in December). Cost? A mere £20. Now That's What I Call... a bargain.

I really must do some research.
I do remember a single being over a pound around 30+ years ago,and staying in all night just to play it

I do apologise, Pru ... those masses ! Ah, I see.

No, I think you will find that its the bus pass brigade that will buy the Susan Boyle single (their annual purchase) after seeing it on something like Surprise, Surprise !

The same people who put Two Little Boys at No 1 ... and the Milkman ... and Mistletoe and Tripe ... as well as Little Jimmy Osmond (didn;t you just want to strangle him?) ... plus Johnny Mathis .... and St Winifred's school choir (more candidates for strangulation) ... and who could possibly forget Army Whores with Piggy Malone ???

ALL granny purchases, surely ?

So the question arises - who might buy Fattie Bum Bum? And my hope there is - everyone. Like Who Let The Dogs out and Kiss Kiss (should have been; as originally done by Tarkan it had a far wider appeal than "sexy" Holly Valance having very limited appeal) - grannys, kids, families, football fans - it's just catchy.

I would predict that they will re-release the charity edition of "Perfect Day" to commerate the death of Lou Reed and it will go to Xmas no. 1 or just be pipped by some instantly forgettable crap from x-factor.

Good thinking Robbie except - everything moves so fast these days, you need to croak on Christmas Eve to get the sales benefit. By Xmas everyone will be saying Lou Who?

I don't know about that JK, radio 1 plays songs several weeks before they go on sale. Well at least they did two years ago when I last listened.

Whoops. A friend just put money on both Susan Boyle/Elvis and Carl Malcolm's Fattie Bum Bum and got only 6-1 and 10-1!
