Most instantly recognisable intro ?

I'd say -

Mr Tambourine Man - The Byrds

I Feel Fine - The Beatles

Agreed - all splendid. I always felt Whatever You Want by Status Quo was a superb intro, taking clever ages to slip into the riff. A very under rated creative group.

Badge by Cream chunky bassline by Jack Bruce.

Urban Spaceman by Bonzo Dog.

Suite Judy Blue Eyes by CSN.

And this one is magnificent.

As an eleven year old, I knew what fringe and buckle stompers and two tone tonic strides were, but the line "lay it on me" baffled us all.

I disagree when I saw them it was dire, there no energy it felt like they didn't want to be there, it seemed like it was effort, crowd was huge and lots of energy from the audience but not from Quo.
