TOPIC: X Factor

X Factor 10 Years, 7 Months ago
We all know the bad aspects but the good ones tend to be overlooked. It's one of the only shows on TV promoting music. I actually think Strictly does it even better as the versions of songs are superior. But X Factor does find and start new talent and exposes it to millions. We picked Simon Cowell and Richard Russell 15 years ago as the only executives in the music industry worth watching. Richard found and promoted Adele. Simon's contribution has been even greater. So let's praise the good side of the series and not only keep on knocking it for the bad aspects.

It's about time they got the arteests on the X Factor to write and perform their own material. This would prove to us what they're really capable of, and if they deserve a recording ocntract. It's sad that they end up becoming svengali pawns to Simon Cowell who gets them to sing an extremely saccharine, gooey, gossamery pile of donkey doos just in time for the Christmas market.

Why don't we see any creative, edgy, witty, clever and thoughtful musicians in popular music anymore? Any ideas Bryan?

1, finding someone who sings well, performs well, looks good, has a likeable personality and can write good songs is incredibly rare.

2, having to write a new song, arrange it and work out a performance for it every single week is a very tall order.

3, the audience want to hear and judge singers based on songs they're already familiar with.

Having said all that, wasn't there a show on Sky that did similar? What was that like?

A couple of years ago they had a girl singing her own songs and she was doing very well but pulled out for health reasons.

Watching two total no talents perform against each other, I did wonder why they bother. But I disagree with the "why don't they perform their own songs?" point made above. One of the problems with modern music is the assumption that singers MUST write their own songs. The result is less good singers singing less good songs. There are very few singers who can write - two totally different talents. Insist on both and you remove the majority of talented people in each art.
