Record of the Year - sadly 10 Years, 6 Months ago
No Record of the Year again this year. Wouldn't you have thought the BPI would be fighting like crazy to get it back on mainstream, prime time TV? Answer - they don't care. "Help sell music? Why should we bother?" is their position. Wouldn't you have thought record label bosses would be pushing them? Answer - the label bosses ARE essentially the BPI and as long as they have a nice evening with bubbly once a year they don't care if the ghastly Brits encourages music sales or not, as long as their pensions will be paid. Wouldn't you think ITV, knowing the show gets 9 million plus viewers, would want it back? Answer - they don't give a shit either.

John Kennedy, Chairman of PolyGram in our first year, told me that the win had put several million extra album sales into the retail tills that Christmas.

Retail? Wot's that?

Anyway, which single would you select? My choice is the Second biggest seller of 2014 so far (1.5 million). Biggest seller? With nearly 2 million - my most annoying track of 2014. Although, thank heavens, that extremely annoying Wiggle Wiggle doesn't seem to have made the top 20. I'll reveal all next week. (The show used to air in the week of my birthday, giving 3 weeks of sales boost to those who liked to sell music).

Numerous private messages saying… sadly, I no longer bother with new music, it's so boring, does anybody care anymore?

The record of the year has to be Rather Be by Clean Bandit.

I think there's been some great music this year. "Happy" is a phenomenon but was 2013. "Rather Be" is superb.

I love both George Ezra singles, "Budapest" and "Blame It on Me", his album is definitely worth a listen too.

I'm not much of a fan of, "Ghost" but Ella Henderson's album is also very good.

"All About The Bass" is a runaway hit without the hype (unlike "Shake It Off"), I'm really torn between that and, "Thinking Out Loud".

All About The Bass is another one that irritates me like mad; each to their own. But I do agree, some good sounds. Surely a TV show featuring ten of them would be great TV, as would the votes counting, always exciting. Still I suppose these TV people know what they are doing ;-(

I'm surprised that Chandelier by Sia isn't in there. A superb song and performance in my opinion. I believe this has been more successful in the rest of Europe than in the UK.

The Sia track was all over Moroccan radio last summer; another one I found irritating. But I really don't mind which songs people love. It's the fact that so few give a shit these days that sickens me. Especially those in "the industry".
