James Last has died 10 Years ago
You may not like his music but his contribution to the music industry is astonishing

If you didn't like the music of James Last then you didn't like music.
Every tune a classic song and his concerts a true cross generational event.

I can just imagine Mr ITK driving in his Proton pretending to James Last.

Just because you cover a great song does not make it a great record !

The skill is in creating a work - not in doing a bland muzak version of it.

Wrong ITK - an incredibly clever different version can make a great track - Bette Davis Eyes by Kim Carnes is the perfect example, compared to Jackie de Shannon's original. But I agree, Last was generally bland muzak.

He recorded a ridiculous amount of music - but some of his arrangements are fantastic. One in particular - his instrumental take of Rod McKuen's 'Jean' - is superb but has disappeared from YouTube.

My theory is this kind of thing was once part of everybody's lives in one way or another, and made up part of every musician's influences one way or another as it was literally 'everywhere' - part of what is completely lacking in pop music (and has been for the past 10 years) is the texture & nuance that came naturally to generations by being exposed to so much different kinds of music.

ITK didn't say anthing to the contraryt. He said Just because...' Which is fair enough. A song doesn't become great 'just because' someone covers it. Most covers are uninspired, lazy and bland. You're an English graduate - come on, read things more carefully!
