There were none greater. One of the best record people of all time, and sharp right until the end.
Guts, Vision, Balls, Ears, Courage, in the face of trying to find the balance between art and commerce. Its what we're all trying to do, and no one did it better than Ahmet.
The savior of the music business that may emerge will not do so without Ahmet's example and qualities.
Sad news indeed; one of the founding fathers of our industry.
I remember the early days when Sir Edward Lewis backed Ahmet and Nesuhi and helped them start Atlantic.
I met Ahmet through Doug Morris during Doug's Warner era.
A giant of music.
The best music book I ever read remains "The Atlantic Years". Obviously, I never met Ahmet myself, but the music he nurtured has shaped so many of our lives.
What can one say?
God bless you man, and thanks for the wonderful music you discovered.
Again, he managed to always stay ahead of the game ... firstly R&B and then soul, but when Motown came along he realised that he had to broaden the labels appeal so he signed alot of the British talent ... Bee Gees / Cream / Led Zeppellin ... and also developed new emerging styles in the USA ... Stephen Stills (CSN&Y) etc.
He was a giant of the business (and allegedly a very nice man too).
