I'm baffled why so many people choose 'Fairy Tale Of New York' above so many other Christmas hits. In my opinion it's just OK but not a patch on Slade or Wizzard or any of the others more worthy of the label 'classic'. I like to be happy at Christmas so prefer songs to be somewhat uplifting.
But we are all different.

I agree with you PaulB, I like the song, but there are much better christmas songs, such as Wizzard, Slade, Wham, Band Aid, Jonah Lewis, the Waitressess, and Mariah Carey (Which is newer than Fairy Tale of New York) and many others.

One thing I hate about the Fairy Tale of New York is the drunken slurred faux irish vocal of Shane Mcgowan. I really don't get it.

Agree about many of the others - my friend John Lewis made a classic; ditto Mariah who I cannot stand but her Christmas song is superb. And dear old Noddy. Then there is Phil Spector's great album; a work of timeless genius. I love McGowan's voice on this though; the slurred Oirish style is magnificent and works a treat, especially contrasting Kirsty's pure virginal vocal.
