Today is also David Bowie's birthday and Terry Sylvester (formerly of the Hollies) birthday, they were both born on January 8, 1948.
So we KNOW how old they are this year. Elvis? No clue.

I've got a 78 of Elvis singing "Hound Dog". Incredible dynamics, which I'm told is down to the depth of the grooves, even though it's in mono.

I would give both my big toes for that record Michael!
That record is a must have for every collector and I don`t have it, but I`m not jealous at all:sick: !

My Elvis top five.

I.Suspicous Minds
2.In the Ghetto
3.The Wonder of You
4.If I can Dream
5.Polk Salad Annie

I wrote that list very fast, and without pre-thought, and noticed that I went for the later Vegas and comeback period.
The adrenaline showed in the opening number of the `68 special is also superb.
I despise all the "end of the pier" impersonators, they ruin the memory of a one off performer.
Happy Birthday E, you changed the world, as did Mr Jones, whose` birthday will unfortunately allways live in a shadow.

Suspicious Minds written by Mark James (who wrote Hooked On A Feeling).

Burning Love written by Dennis Linde (mentioned as an RIP here a few weeks ago) who wrote Hello I Am Your Heart (one of the best tracks on EARTH TO KING...).

You can hear it on LISTEN HERE - title 13.

I didn`t know Mark James wrote "Hooked" as well. Less and less writers write truely varied songs these days.
"Burning Love" has one of the most interesting intros of any standard rock song ever and Eltons "Step Into Christmas" owes it a nod.
But today is about Elvis and Elvis stories and the record that started my life long quest in this business was the 1971 re-issue of "Heartbreak Hotel".
My life was changed in under 3 minutes.TOTP had no visuals for the tune, and I had no idea who Elvis was.
It`s allways a sad day, the guy could have still been making wonderful records today, with wonderful musicians and producers.

Interesting fact about Elvis is that he had an incredible output - but how much is actually worth anything (musically)? 1% maybe?

Had he continued recording would that now be 0.01%?

Indeed and often discussed ITK.
Why did they put so much material out that was blatantly demoes?
Not only that, but it came out at a budget price at the time.
Ok, maybe I can answer that myself given the benefit hindsight, and with a question, did Elvis get a bigger profile by the cheaper albums coming out?
There are some absolutely brilliant Elvis albums and some one play only albums. This is a shame.
We love you E, we just didn`t like you singing "certain songs".
That`s a list that I will not start!

The first Elvis record we had in our house (when I were a lad) was 'Just Can't Help Believing'. I also liked 'In The Ghetto' and 'My Boy'. One of my very favourite Elvis tracks is 'It's Midnight', which was on the flip side of 'Promised Land'.

There's a boy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis .... It's the truth! It's actual! He was named after The King of Rock n Roll. (Better than another boy his age who's Man Utd crazy father named him Trafford!!).

When I used to sell second-hand records we'd get the occasional punter who with glee would tell us they had an Elvis 78... always the same reply - pity you don't have the 45 it's actually worth something.

Elvis before the army is probably his most interesting period.

It is indeed, but I do so love the later band, a dream come true would be to have them back me for just one minute.
Incidently, "One Night With You", is under two minutes in length.
Most of my 78`s snapped under the weight of the others.
There were no Elvis ones, but some interesting classical early form of the "box sets". For exmaple, Beethoven accross 5 X 78 records, in a lovely box.
Anybody who has not heard my "King of Rock N Roll", cand click here

I think it`s the third one down,on the site and is now deleted.
