It would make a fascinating collection, but a labour of love for anyone that has the job of going through them all, for little gain I fear. There is a Joe Meek thing on in London in February, interest could be guaged by attendance.
If anyone does buy them, I`m quite happy to go through some to help, but I mean some!!! I anticipate spools of tape everywhere.
I imagine they are in many different taped formats, the same as a small collection I have here of reel to reels, including three tapes recorded on half track, which imagine I will never be played again as finding someone with the correct machine, which is massive, will be expensive.
Joe Meeks` are probably 60`s Phillips` ones.
And there indeed is a question for JK, what was Mr Meeks studio like in the conrol room?
I'm a huge Joe Meek fan, but sadly have to admit that they would find no buyers. The public have never even heard of him - and after all this time you would not find enough buyers to pay for the launch party !
There you go then! Proof of what a great inovator Joe Meek was. He was recording in the same way that 90% of Myspace is recorded today, i.e. in the bedroom, 40 years ago.
I am going to own up I never heard Joe Meek since loggin onto kinofhits and I only heard the Honeycombs as my dad has got the CD couple of songs by Cryin Shames which JK recommended to me.
What I heard so far is good, but I'd like to hear more before I call myself a Meek fan or commit myself to buy some Meek collections on Amazon.
I had "Have I the Right" by the Honeycombs when I was very small, and was incredibly impressed by the very loud female drummer. This of course turned out to be Joe Meeks classic use of his bath tub! It`s quite funny looking back on it really, there was no way that little lady could hit the kit that hard, but I wanted to believe it so I did!
It really did have an incredible noise that bathroom, and it`s a shame that bits of it are not in the Rock n Roll hall of fame.
I recorded a demo vocal once in a bathroom as we could not afford a reverb unit.It was just what was needed, an iron bath and a stone floor.
Yes ITK, a similar thing happened to Marc Bolan after his death, you could buy his back catalogue on Castle Communications like it was worthless.
This problem has since been sorted out, but at a dreadful cost to the lost artistes` family.
I still prefer to hunt the old vinyl down, but it does nothing for the industry sadly.
That said, a decent Joe Meek box set, with a book and dvd etc and a decent publicity campaign could possibly appeal to the historian and a new generation fascinated by his life and acts.

We all know about Meek and Spector but who ever knew that the gun Meek used actually belonged to Heinz ? I'm going to try and write and song about Meek and Heinz.
I keep you posted.
wow who ever thought Heinz would own such a thing ?

Heinz bought the gun for use to relieve boredom on the road. Heinz himself said they would stop off in various places to shoot birds and rabbits. Unfortunately he ended up leaving it behind at 304 Holloway Road and indeed Heinz was Prime Suspect for a short time due to his prints plastered all over the gun. Meeks personal assistant Patrick Pink, the only man to witness what happened that day was the immediate suspect and was jeered as the Police escorted him away from the premises.

Sadly I wasn't there... I was born 5 years after Meeks' death. My own knowledge has been pieced together from various sources most notably John Repschs' biography, Joe Meek Appreciation Society Newsletters and various CD liner notes and autobiographies of artistes who encountered Meek. In fact I was reading Noddy Holders' autobiography last week and he talked about his pre-Slade band recording at number 304, but Noddy had zero respect for Joe and I found his remarks on him a bit insulting.
Last I heard about Patrick Pink was that he was working on his own Meek memoirs... that was about last year, so I look forward to eventually buying and reading them. It no longer seems to be up online but there was a page on which Patrick told his account of THAT day going into much detail about its immediate aftermath and his arrest and interrogation. Sad and grim reading. Bless him.
