a highly emotive topic indeed, but one that has raised its ungly head before, not least in the case of The Beatles. Now I agree that sometimes people get dismissed from jobs/gigs for very good reasons. Unfortunate and often sad but...
What does piss me off is when band members work their socks off, are often very good at what they do, only to be dropped once signed by a label. Then, the label proceeds to "re-invent" the very thing they signed. Then it fails because the fans go away because they don't like what the label has spent grillions of quids on i.e. moulding the band to be what they think will go. Then the band gets dropped. Eh?
And how often have we seen teens reduced to tears on national TV as they depart the X Factor? I happen to think that young musicians and performers have to be treated carefully. They don't know what we know.
Well i could harp on about the exploitation of young people and so on but I won't go down that path. Neither will I blame them for taking part in the show.
I spent the best part of last night listening to some beautiful music on Rhapsody from mostly reggae artists as I was feeling nostalgic. Reggae was one of the first genres of music i loved growing up as a young black kid in West London. I also loved Motown and the Everly Brothers having been introduced to them by my parents.
I also listened to some music of American disco bands in the early 80s which reminded me of my school days. One thing all the songs i listened to had in common was they were set up by people who loved a particular style of music, strove for excellence and eventually got the hits.
It got me thinking of our whole attitude to music, artists, hits and the like. In the rat race of the music industry people trample on others for the sake of ratings, destroying them with dismissive and unnecessary comments. Let's not forget the Big Brother saga where the press crucified Jade for being racist as if White Jade has no feelings for calling her scum, chav and all the other horrible things the press wrote about her.
Sometimes you can wish for evil to befall the perpetrators but then the words of the wise man comes into my head 'love your enemies'. Life is too short to mess about with negativity. If we rose above the oppression using peaceful methods we show these people that
1. They are immature and unspiritual.
2. No amount of ink can kill you.
So to the young and the band, keep your head high of course examine if you could have handled things better but once you have come to your conclusion move on and honour your ex member who committed suicide.
