Yes the rumour I hear is they don't buy it to play it. They do that on downloads with Ipods. The vinyl is a better physical source of information and memory file unit!
The artwork on the Mika vinyl 7" is stunning, it`s a great product as well, with a cut out so that you see the inner sleeve.
I think it could be a long time before vinyl will be confident sold in a plain white sleeve again though, in fact I don`t think it will happen.
The equivalent of the plain white sleeve 7" is the download.
I was just sorting through the vinyl singles in my JukeBox the other day. The JukeBox has a shelf inside where I keep all the singles not currently being used.
It's been a while since I looked at them and I was genuinely surprised at the wave of nostalgia that came over me as I looked at the picture covers, the labels - even the different centres, and consistencies (some seem heavier/less flexible than others). Each record seems to have a character of it's own ... and as they all used to belong in my disco collection many of them have phone numbers or messages written on them.
By comparison our CD collection looks rather sterile ..
Having said that, the first Dastards release (on March 18th) is download only ...
Our next release is download only in April, I`m not doing cd`s at all, but I am getting more and more tempted by the "vinyl trophy" idea to back it up.
It took me some time to stop missing the 12" by 12" artwork when CDs took over
It may become increasingly useful/popular for an act to have materials that you can't download and print for free - in some ways using music to sell other thing has been creping in and taking over for some years - the single with a cutout sort of thing.
I wonder if 12" versions of CD artwork would be a seller? It would be quite weird if the album "cover" sold separately and even made a comeback.
In terms of sales, last week's chart had two singles that sold just under 2000 each on vinyl, Red Hot Chili Peppers & Towers Of London both on 7'. The biggest selling 12' was Mason which sold 500 out of a weekly sales total of 12,500 interestingly dance tracks like Cascada on AATW aren't on 12" vinyl.
