I can only speak from experience Sandra, I have written many free articles, some that I have had cheques for and some that I have been even paid in vouchers for. It sounds like "Advertorial".

That is an advert that looks like an article, often written in-house at the publication but not always.

IRC there is usually a comment on the very top of the page that states it is an advert. Can't think of an example off-hand but if you keep an eye out you will see it.

There's no sense in even thinking about paying that much for a review in an indy mag. If you're struggling for reviews try Devolution magazine, they're slowly expanding their readership base.
