I had a rant a while back about videos being made available without the consent of the writers or publishers.

I've just come across a perfect example: a track for which I wrote the lyrics ten years ago. It was never released as a single (that I'm aware of). But someone somewhere decided to add their own video.

So much for the flattery. The trouble is they chose to illustrate it with documentary footage of Himmler's Desert Rats.

What can I say? Two breaches of copyright for the price of one. A rather personal song associated with the Third Reich. Fucking brilliant this user-generated web 2.0 new business model.

I really like the track, I can see your dimemna, the flattery is nice in the use of the work, but I would be quite unhappy to find one of my songs, with, for example, an old pre-war 1940`s cartoon attached to it.

Difficult one, the last thing you want to do is tell someone off for being into your work.

I have a fan of one of our acts in the USA who endlessly creates posters for them, none of which will ever be used, unfortunately he has now put them all on a website.

I know how you feel. I'm all over myspace with songs, co-writes, playing drums, guitars and so on.

I suppose I should be flattered...can I do all that at once? Mmmmmmmmmm...ever onward.

I think my view on this whole thing is it depends on how well it is done.

The video in question is just naff. That would irk me. Having said that it's going to be a limited audience most probably of the authors friends. One or two may pick-up on the song.

Recently mentioned - the video has been edited to fit the song very professionally.

If I were in Flogging Molly's position I'd be delighted, because it has been done well - done as well as the music.

For me it's a quality issue - the video of this thread adds nothing to the song. How much I would object or care I don't know.
