As you are all obsessed by Eurovision .... 18 Years, 2 Months ago
Can anyone name ANY winner (other than Abba obviously !) who ever had a career after Eurovision?

Bucks Fizz had a couple more hits but their career had dried up within a couple of years.

I can't even remember any follow-ups from Gina G or Katrina !

My answer, MM, is that you can make of it what you deserve.

The obvious answer is... it didn't do Celine Dion any harm.

And my other point is - MOST big hitmakers have one (or 2 or 3) hits only and then a career based on those few successes. The real artistes are the tiny minority. Check the singles charts back anytime and you'll see 99% of the names never again hitting the top of the charts.

Brotherhood Of Man didn't do badly after it. They'd been around a while before it too.

Though, really, it doesn't matter. There are many artists who would love to be a one hit wonder - rather than a no hit wonder.

OK - 2 examples (out of Eurovision's, what, 50 year history?)

Celine (if I am right) re-emerged later (and not as a result of Eurovision?)

Brotherhood of Man followed quite a clever route really, got their hit, made their name and have continued to stay on the road for many years. They never had to change to a different career.

Johnny Logan isn't complaining about the breaks he got from EV.

Have you ever heard of Sandie Shaw? Lulu? Dana? I'm sure other winners from abroad had similar homespun success. People like Vicky Leandros and Nicole also had a few hits here after winning.

Good points Fred, I think you went back further than most of us, but it does illustrate our point about quality songs.

I still say it's what you make of it.

Any record label worth its salt should have snapped up DIMA BILAN after last year's Eurovision and turned him into a global star.

It's not Eurovision's fault. It's the fault of weak, useless record executives.

I think Sandie Shaw proves MY point - not yours !!!

She had been a successful artist for several years, but after "Puppet" hardly had a Top 20 again !

21 Sandie Shaw Tonight In Tokyo Jul 1967
18 Sandie Shaw You've Not Changed Oct 1967
27 Sandie Shaw Today Feb 1968
6 Sandie Shaw Monsieur Dupont Feb 1969
27 Sandie Shaw Hand In Glove Apr 1984

Much the same goes for Lulu - the career had all but dried up by the time of Boom Bang A Bang -

3 Lulu The Man Who Sold The World Jan 1974
37 Lulu Take Your Mama For A Ride Apr 1975
8 Lulu Shout Jul 1986
11 Lulu Independence Jan 1993
27 Lulu & Bobby Womack I'm Back For More Apr 1993
24 Lulu Where The Poor Boys Dance Mar 2000

Indeed, but who employed the "useless executives"?
Ah yes, the previous ones, spending other peoples money and taking a wage, and taking the occasional(?) developed act from the skint and forward thinking , risk ,taking, indies.

I think there is a genuine case now,(which i previously didn`t believe) for the sake of music, for the majors to genuinley part-time employ, on contract, indie A+R.

No scouting, no free-feedback from tips on gigs.

Wage these people, there is a lot of them out there.

I challenge one major A+R guy to tell me when he last went to a karaoke contest or light entertainment show to find members for a band like Scootch.

Dana? Yes - staggering follow-up career that was ! -

1 Dana All Kinds Of Everything Apr 1970
14 Dana Who Put The Lights Out Feb 1971
8 Dana Please Tell Him That I Said Hello Jan 1975
4 Dana It's Gonna Be A Cold Cold Christmas Dec 1975
31 Dana Never Gonna Fall In Love Again Mar 1976
13 Dana Fairytale Oct 1976

(Go on - admit it - you have never even HEARD any of the follow-up singles, have you?)

Ah yes MM, but she followed it up with a surprising career in politics as well due to her new fame.

It is debatable whether she would have been able to create the focus without the career boost from EuroV.

We all have to take our breaks where we can get them for what we want to do.

I did like "Cold Cold Xmas"though as well, aside from that.

Whatever happened to Dana International, the Israeli transvestite?

Anyway, let's not forget that the EV is supposed to be a song contest. And there have been a few memorable ones, although the last one I really remember is Tatu's Russian entry for some reason.

Sorry, Fred - your memory is playing tricks on you!

Vicky Leandros - just one week (at No 40) after Eurovision !

2 Vicky Leandros Come What May Apr 1972
40 Vicky Leandros The Love In Your Eyes Jan 1973

and Nicole ?

Never appeared in the chart again !

There are basically 2 types of act in Eurovision - the freaks / no-hopers who want 10 mins of fame (Jemini / Lordi / Dana International etc) and the has-beens who are desperately trying to hold onto / resurrect a career (Nicky French / Katrina etc)

KATRINA

I think she has a great voice and loads of future potential.

We need a good, middle aged diva with attitude and Katrina still has all that.

As for Nikki French - wasn't she the secret voice singing on the SCOOCH track? Something not yet discovered by the tabloids (but any day now).
