Here's an opportunity: give your music away for free and agree never to be paid. Plus, promise that none of the band are record company execs or publishers, tie up the track for 90 days in the off-chance we listen to it, etc etc etc.

I have to wonder if it's legal (it's certainly not fair). Strange that an industry that is becoming so worried about people pimping its content is so happy to pimp someone else's! Can't they even afford $2000 for a licence fee?

Seriously, though, I seem to remember that contracts involved rights and obligations on both sides. In this agreement they specifically say that they won't necessarily do anything! And even if they do, you won't get paid. Surely that contract could be easily later broken as being an abuse of position and unfairly one-sided?

Yeah, I'm sure people would have a case. However, do you know any young aspiring artiste with enough clout/money/brains to take Geffen, Lion et al to court to prove it? Stateside?

Quite an amusing Catch 22 emerging here.

Everybody is starting to to do it for themselves, so the majors answer is to "do it for ourselves for us."
