FAB Chart 18 Years, 1 Month ago
Congrats to Kamloops on his second week at the top.

Also to Mart for going up again even though he went down a couple of weeks ago.

At 18 there's a new entry from Martin Gallagher with a raw but happy sounding song called Morning Fantasy.

At 13 is a rock band from Canada called Grindstone who sound very much like Simple Minds but perhaps a touch less boring.

Highest new entry is at 11 for The Fiery Furnaces and the suitably titled 'Here Come Summer' (even though it's cold and overcast up here in the North).

Powerlight and Scott Slater each have high climbers, and Tom Waits nudges up into the top ten.

Cheers Fab people, it`s very hot here, and we return to the studio after the United v City match(literally!)

I havent had a chance to flip through the new entries yet, but I never tire of listening and watching Kamloops.
Which reminds me, I need a new razor!

Nice one Kamloops - well deserved an entertaining video.

Oh Mart... all hail the lobster!

I like Morning Fantasy... isn't it sailing a bit close to Simon and Garfunkel? Can't remember the title of the song, it begins with "Do-be-do be-do" that one.

Less fond of Pinball Wizard.. oopps I mean Grindstone.

Here Comes Summer - Fiery Furnaces, distorts in a nasty way for me, I'm not fond of this fad with mastering where they push it to unpleasant distortion to get it loud. Very odd ending - more of a stop.

Glad Tom Waits is in there - I know he's a bit of an acquired taste but it does show the compilers of the FAB Chart are into music and not fashion statements.

The Fiery Furnaces track does stop sudden. I think it's most likely a dodgy link. I quite like the distorted element, it reminds me of something from years ago.

Speaking of things sounding like things ... time for some name dropping ... I recall Les Grey telling me how one day Rob Davis came into the studio really enthusiastic about a new song he'd written. After he'd played it to them, Les broke it to him that he'd just re-written 'A Hard Day's Night'. Easily done.

Thats the sign of a hit song indeed Cat, when a writer does not realise how much it has got into their creative brain, and they think they wrote it!
The classic example of it working the other way around, is Macca humming "Scrambled Eggs" for days without realising he had actually written "Yesterday" without putting pen to paper.

How is the FAB Chart calibrated/scored? It always seems chock-full of interesting and entertaining stuff...unlike, presently, another chart that springs to mind

Having listened to 'Morning Fantasy' a few times now I have concluded that it is nothing like 'Mrs Robinson'. It does remind me of something by The Frank And Walters, but most songs remind me of several others even if they don't directly sound like them.

We are just manufacturing some ltd edition "The Lobster Is out of the Freezer" badges should any fabsters want them when the album comes out in full in June.

I'm backing away from my Mrs Robinson thing there is a little bit (slightly) reminiscent but not entirely.

It's still ringing bells in the back of my mind - it sounds familiar but it may be 2 or 3 songs combined from the late 60s era. Not sure.

I do like song - quite a bit actually.

Wasn't it The Boxer which had do-be-do's in it? Though that's nothing like the song in the chart either.

Thr Boxer was "La La la`s", followed by a reverb drum sound that sounded like a lightening strike!

Actually it was "Lie La Lie" but let's not get pedantic.

The Boxer is my favourite track of one of my favourite LPs. Wonderful stuff.

On a side, isn't it wonderful the way these threads evolve.

Indeed.

When I used to screen print for a living, it became an in joke to crash the drying racks in time with the drum crashes on The Boxer.
I wish i`d sampled it, it was a wonderful noise!
