Favourite "B" sides as promised... 18 Years, 1 Month ago
.I tried to put them in order but it`s impossible.( I only did 6)
Anyone contributing to the thread should not include double "A" sides,or album tracks, i.e "Reason to Believe" by Rod Stewart is not eligible.

1977.............The Clash
Raw Ramp.........T.Rex
Second that Emotion..Japan
Rose...Mott the Hoople
When I Live My Dream..David Bowie.
Y Trois Gymnopedies...Gary Numan.

It`s a hard genre list to create as, a lot of this stuff has been put on albums later.

Have fun guessing the "A"sides.

Here's 6 of my favorite B-sides, off the top of my head, and in no particular order .. including the one I mentioned in the other thread.

"West of the Mountain, East of the Sea" - Rainland.
"Last Tango in London" - MUD
"Nice Cup Of Tea" - John Dummer and Helen April
"That's A Fact" - Gilbert O'Sullivan
"Shake My Sugar" - Suzie Quatro
"Norah Batty's Stockings" - Bill Owen and Kathy Staff

I think I've avoided album tracks, although some might have been added to "Best Of" CDs at a later date.

as I recall, Strawberry Fields was the B side to Penny Lane...it does not get any better I'm afraid.

Now I remember Strawberry (which I loved) as the A side and Penny Lane (which I didn't), the B.

I suspect it was - rightly - a Double A and therefore not eligible, Big End.

I think I'll choose my own B to Una Paloma Blanca - Inpraiseofuk, considered obscene by many, a straight plug for our other releases and provoking howls of horror from - you guessed it - the Tabloids (and dealers) in 1975.

I remember "In Praise of UK", and I will be completely honest, I`m afraid , we turned all the records over on the stacking system on the record player at a party we had in our schooldays,(like you did) urrm..., we didnt get the point at the time to be polite!

Nick Lowe did a similar track for Stiff which appeared on a compilation only (so that doesnt count) called "I Love My Label".

Magazine deserve a mention in this thread for their cover of "Goldfinger".(not a hit A side though, probably doesnt count, but a good example of how the A+B were probably the wrong way round).

Talking of The Beatles, I always preferred "I Am The Walrus" over "Hello Goodbye", "The Inner Light" over "Lady Madonna" and "Revolution" over "Hey Jude"! Nothing against Paul, just my own preferences.

There were a lot of great B'sides throughout the 60s. The Kinks and The Hollies to name two regularly cut great B'sides, too many to mention really!

"Long Long While" The Rolling Stones
"Conversation Piece" David Bowie
"Paint Box" Pink Floyd
"You Don't Know Where Your Interest Lies" Simon & Garfunkel
"Do I Have To Come Right Out and Say It" Buffalo Springfield

That was easy and fun...thanks.

Hi JK.

As we know, Beatles acetates are always collectable BUT the thing that really makes yours special is Lennons' inscription. Lennon signatures fetch high prices anyway but I can't think of many Beatle acetates I've heard of which were inscribed by him. I know there are some inscribed by Paul but mostly acetates would feature rather anonymous scrawl by the disc cutter, not the artiste.

Something else to bear in mind. If the acetate is a slightly different mix to what they released, then that would also up the value. Due to the way the Beatles recorded, acetates often featured songs in varying degrees of progress and for John to ask you what you think hints it may had been before they made the final decision to release the single. John was very unhappy with it because he felt the A'side should had been "Walrus"!

So, its the Lennon inscription and enquiry that makes that acetate such a unique item. An actual estimate is impossible but I'd be willing to guess a 4 figure sum at least.

Mine would be:

Shameless - Pet Shop Boys
One Way Or Another - Blondie
The Start/I Don't Remember - Peter Gabriel

I'm sure there are plenty more!

It seems to have caught everyone`s imagination this thread, here` a few more which must be included.

Armagideon Time, The Clash
Please Don`t Pretend Again, The Honeycombs.
Bored Teenagers, The Adverts
Psycho, Elvis Costello(All would have been hits)

I agree with Ting a ling a Loo, by Benny Hill, that was a complete waste sticking the obvious follow up to a massive freak hit on the back of it.
Arguably, it might have made it a bigger hit though.
It is still one of the only records that I can`t play just one side of, it has real "turnoverability".

It is of note with the minor vinyl re-emergence, in the 50 or so singles I have bought in the last 12 months, I have not played one of the "B" sides more than once.
