Can I just put this straight for the record?
I played Jimi Hey Joe by a Californian group called The Leaves. He had never heard it (or played it) before. I have a Thank You letter from Jimi for turning him onto Tim Rose's song.
Chas Chandler (who I loved) never heard Jimi playing it in New York before he brought Jimi to London.
History has been rewritten - not for the first time!
Despite the above, JK, it was a hugely enjoyable programme.
I do hope young people were watching (which I doubt on a Saturday night) but remembering that era, which was quite electric, puts today's music (and young people) to shame.
In the 60's we would have brought Iraq to a halt in weeks.
It was indeed a good show. I think I might start collecting these things and make kids sit down and watch them as homework.
I wouldn't go so far as to say that everything was better then (I only have vague childhood memories of it), but it's good to see the gradual development of a scene dissected like that.
