Cheers guys, also on Napster and E-Music, pretty much all of them I think.
Playlisted locally as well from tonight the stations are playing the same game as we are, as it were.
Well, you can`t sit back and expect things to happen!

The problem is going to be the one we have already detailed... the old model is broken, we know, but an efficient new one is nowhere near in place.

So... the chart means nothing but the majors continue to hype it and to aim all their dollars at it.

Since radio and TV (TV?) is run by deaf morons, they still tend to use the chart to programme (why?).

The other areas of exposure (Internet, clubs, gigs) are having little co-ordinated effect on exposure or promotion.

So a hit simply doesn't get heard.

Or sold.

It's very, very hard.

Indeed a subject discussed much, and I tell you something out of interest and of note, despite Koopa`s assault on the chart from a DIY point of view...
...I don`t believe I`ve actually ever heard them!

It`s a wonderful joke isn`t it? A chart full of titles that nobody has heard a tune for ever.

This could of course create one of the most ironic situations ever, of a top twenty full of silent cd`s with a nice cover!

I have no answer to the new model than anyone else, but what i am attempting to do is look at what we HAVE got , which is a local following and encourage everyone to be a part of it.
That was the original model invented by Mr Epstein I believe.
I`m less and less sure about taking a band out of their comfortable following and sticking them in front of 10 or 20 people at one of the London showcase venues.

A session musician asked me the other week what it was like financially, having download sales coming through.
I replied, "It`s a bit like having a paper round on the side."

Punk Not Dead!

Mart, that track is the first download I've ever bought.

Gosh I've been hurled into the 21st Century! (Where are the hover-cars?)

New model mantra... less one big one and more many small ones

Cheers Michael nice one, much apppreciated.
And thanks Zoo as well.

There actually is a very logical reason why we have used very few photos as yet, not many acts grow a foot in height each in developement, so we have hid behind the logo for a bit.
Many photos on the Myspace.

Re:Would I ever hint to you guys what an important day this is??? 18 Years ago
you are right Jk, it is very, very hard at moment. However, something has to give. We are trying both top down and bottom up i.e. promo to FMs, but also targeting DJs, high street bars and clubs, independent DJs and summer roadshows, fairs, viral marketing and generally getting it out there to ears one by one if needs be.

Going after (hopefully) steady sales rather than the fast smash.

Ah, splendid, I feel the need to get into something traditional and do the "Global Yodal". Must dash...

Time for me to give you my 2cents on this issue.

The current system isn't dead as far as the majors are concerned. It is on life support. As for Koopa well they are no different to Delirious (remember them anyone). Their success was basically down to their fanbase sales and a mobilised assault on the charts. We are seeing this here (in OZ) with Hillsong Church regularly getting into the top ten and annoying everyone in the process. Kudos to them i say.

The main problem i see is that everyone is equally mobilising efforts using methods fair and foul alike and as such there is no noticeable difference to the charts, yet ! Add to that the fact that upto 20% of album sales have been eroded over the last 5 years and the recording industry is in crisis, except if you weren't a part of its success to begin with, what crisis ? You shouldn't care !

The majors well will soon feel the pinch because the decline ain't slowing. For everyone outside the majors it is time to think about the future.

Radio playlist: Forget it. They won't playlist you.
Major Press coverage: forget it. You won't get it.
Heavy Rotation on video: Forget it.

At least for the moment. Like all musical movements, chaos always precedes stability. The internet age has arrived and it is time to take advantage of its strengths and not live in old world realities which are closed to you anyway. It doesn't matter whether you have a smash or not. To be visible everywhere at the same time, at the moment, you would need the Majors to carpet bomb the media on your behalf.

I think if you are lean and mean you must now think of alternative revenue streams. By all means still sell your downloads and CDs but these should be secondary income. In the US in the last 5 years over 50,000 indie releases sold less than 100 copies. CD sales are not going to be your primary income.

I remember once when i worked for this IT company, they had a 'ripple release' strategy. That means you release the product several times to one group at a time and in different formats each time. Example.

1. Videotube (video) should be released first. Streaming on the net and through a site with ads. Sorry if you hate ads but for fecks sake have your artist blog sponsor your video and plaster google ads over it.

2. Free mp3 tagged with advertising look at we7 for example or DIY your own. The band can record a radio style ident mentioning sponsors name. By the way you must have limited free mp3s all paid for by said sponsor. Iknow i have been beating this drum for a while and i know that not everyone will agree but i am concerned about dollars coming in to pay for your recording, lawyers etc by any means necessary while you're in the 'promotional' phase.

3. Physical release. Get it on vinyl and/or DVD. Note
no CD single.

4. Remix, remaster and resell on Itunes etc. At this stage you should have fans who can then buy the downloads/physical release.

In all the above concentrate on growing your audience, creating a lifestyle worth being a part of and expanding. Word of mouth marketing is the ONLY marketing tool you need. All other forms of marketing MUST feed into that and then your audience can grow outwards.

Above all have some panache and balls about you. Say bollox to the media and everyone. Tell them to eff off but LET them know what you are doing and how wonderful it is in your enclave. Build it. THEY WILL COME.

The animals came in 2 by 2 hoorah hoorah !
Important parable. According to the biblical story. When Noah started building the ark and invited everyone to come in, they all laughed at him. When the flood was in full stream, they begged to get in but could not. Eventually the phones will ring non stop and offers will come a plenty.

I can`t dissagree with any of that as a business plan, a very good post indeed.
Point 3, I am particularly in favour of, and the cd singles seems to be more popular with the acts/gig goers than anyone else.
Totally irrelevent of chart or radio play of course.

The key word on point 4 , is "fans", if people had remained fans and been sold products that they felt were worth parting cash for as opposed to downloading for free, none of this collapse in the media would have happened.
Therefore the new model product has to look and not only sound like a "must have" item.
I quite like the idea of a LTD edition numbered download certificates, with bonus track and things like that.

Re:Would I ever hint to you guys what an important day this is??? 18 Years ago
That's great news. I would say as long as you have a plan implemented and people to help enforce than plan as an indie...that this is our revolution! We have direct access to get instant feedback from the people who matter the most (the consumer)and unload our products directly to them, with way less red-tape than ever before.

Youtube is a huge outlet. CNN takes somethin off of Youtube just about every morning. That's a powerful tool right there!

The only thing that you listed below that I'm not absolutely sure about is the Vinyl part.

I know Majors are cutting back on Vinyl due to the Serrato (not sure of the spelling) system that many DJ's have access too. I'm not sure how the Dj's overseas are taking to this, but I have seen hundreds of Dj's in the states with there laptops and directly download there music straight from the computer and pump it right in the club or the radio station from there laptops.

With all this being said, do you all think that Vinyl will soon be obsolete within this decade?

I met a number of labels that visited Midem for the first time this year, and they were gushing about the opportunities. I was gobsmacked. This is an industry that has been seeing double-digit revenue losses for the past five years at least.

But I realised these were labels that were happy to get an extra territory or licensed into a few compilations whereas once doing the business meant getting a whole continent or physically selling stock to a major distributor in Germany. Or placing the song with a million-selling artist.

Our expectations have changed. And with the constant threats on both mechanical and performance rights, I'm not too sure this is going anywhere uphill soon for most of us.

Apart from that, just remember the basics of generating money in the music business: get people to Listen-Like-Buy in that order.

Just to answer your last question there mrnscinse, I personally believe will be problematic and gimmicky for a while, but certainly not obsolete.

I think it will become a desire item again.
