"the surging popularity of downloading music from the internet", says it all really. But what a horrible shock for the employees suddenly finding themselves out of work. I can only see more of this in the future.
It also says "...hit by the rise of supermarkets and online retailers selling CDs and DVDs".
Fopp did online sales themselves.
How much of this is using the Internet as the unspeakable monster to avoid the reality that, with recent large purchases of another company, this is just a business that expanded beyond it's own ability.

Spot on ! Fopp started out as a single market stall ... good at what they did. When they tried to be HMV they go out of business by expanding too much into their non-core area.
Only Fopp store I ever saw was in Manchester city centre. Shame it's now dead and buried. It was a shop I enjoyed shopping in and many bargains were to be had.
