Really? I was always a little fascinated by them - thought the way they "shine" when the light hit them made them look rather special - and of course the sound quality was far superior to most other releases back then.
I found the comment that Philips wanted to make them smaller, and last an hour, interesting, but they didn't want several formats to evolve and wanted to get other firms to standardise. Sony would only agree to a length that could include the whole of a Beethoven symphony (74 mins) - and that's how the length got decided.

My first CD (in 2/86) was London 0 Hull 6 (The Housemartins).
Great music, but I bought it because I believed the hype around DDD.
I resisted the change to CDs for some years. And I was absolutely sure that I would never buy a CD of an album I already had on vinyl ... And now I own 3 or 4 different CD versions of some records.

Well, I must admit, I`m still struggling on this issue!
But, I think, It was either Tracy Chapman, or Elton`s "Reg Strikes Back".
After that, it was definitely Floyds" Momentary Lapse of Reason" and Roger Waters "Radio Choas"
Notably only Tracy`s album stands the test of time, but that`s personally thinking.
