At long last... THE WIG!
JK is spot on about using that to help sell the record. The problem I always had with Disco was it was rather faceless. As long as it had that beat and the sound, you genuinely didn't care or remember who it was. Don't forget also that many jumped on the bandwagon so for a few years it really was Disco hell with many many records fighting to get noticed. So, to get noticed, one needed a memorable gimmick.
The day after JK's appearance on TOTP, everybody at school were talking about "the bloke with that wig" whilst some argued it must be a "real" head of hair... I hasten to add I was in the infants at the time! Plus it has to be remembered the wig was used throughout the promotion. I recall the first Guinness Book of Hit Singles... its cover had various stars lined up in a pose and there was JK standing out like a lighthouse in the wig!
So I think that proves JK's point about the wig. It got noticed, talked about and the record sold as a result. And a fine record it is too.
