BPI Thread - what a lot of wankers! 17 Years, 5 Months ago
They should have helped me when ITV dropped The Record of the Year (imagine this year's show, with Leona, Take That, Mika, Rihanna, Plain White T's and others...)
They should have planned better for the download explosion - and they could have saved hundreds of retailers...
Their blinkered and major dominated positions have been key to the total collapse of the music industry.
Now there's a real space for a new industry body representing TALENT in all areas (executives as well as artistes).
And the BPI could be dead by Christmas (like the majors will be).

Leaving aside personal interest which sadly tends to cloud JK's postings, the BPI cannot be held responsible for all the Industry's ills.Formed to be a trade body to promote and represent the whole music business, they merely reflect the parlous state of what is happening.
As far as what this year holds, here are 4 suggestions.
1. Warners must replace Bronfman, Cohen and Vien. These three men have dragged a great music company to the brink as the share price on Wall Street indicates.
They have signally failed to show any sensible forward thinking vision or understanding of the global marketplace, merely reying pushing headlong into a Digital only model which less than 20% of consumers actually want.
2. Bertelsmann will sell their stake in Sony/BMG .They want to get out of the game and concentrate on other key areas of "content"
3.EMI will be pared down to just one A&R source and marketing imprint. There will be mass firings at the senior and middle management levels, consequently they will struggle to compete for a while in signing new acts while offloading most of their current rosters.
4. As the concert business goes from to strength to strength, investment in new state of the art arenas will continue. This will impact on the value of those mega acts who fill them ,increasing the value of their catalogues-publishing and recorded. The bigger artists will start to take back control of their work using small marketing consultancies to exploit them.
