I'm not sure if I approve of this at all.

Is it a look alike? Is it the original track?
Either way, the damage to the song and the feeling is serious.

Can they only get away with this because of lapsed copyright? Is it out of time?

Check out the ad and see if you're as troubled as I am.

I don't think it's the genuine Edith. Certainly the vocals don't sound right, and I'm sure they use an actress "look-alike".

But I'm sure it's not the first time TV ads have done this.

Glad you mentioned it,I saw it last night and thought it was a disgraceful use of one of the most amazing and iconic pieces of music/performance ever. I've never been to Specsavers and certainly wouldn't now!

The recording is from 1960 (according to the liner notes of a Capitol-Records-Greatest-Hits-CD). So it's still protected by copyright.

If the original version is used, EMI (desperate for money) gave the permission.

I still haven't recovered from that "Singin' In The Rain" ad with the song given a modern twist and CGI used on Gene Kelly. That really angered me whenever I saw that. I've yet to see this Piaf spectacle...

Specsavers have achieved a modicum of success in getting you lot to discuss their brand and advertising. It is a fake , of course, the estate and film company would never allow such usage, but it is effective advertising and it may, who can tell, sell some Edith Piaf catalogue. So why worry!

I've yet to see this Piaf spectacle...Or another view, what an amazing remix of an old classic. On the dancing, absolutely stunning and on the CGI, done to perfection.

A great deal of time and work went into this and it should be applauded.

IMO.

I pay little attention to ads anyway, but it has never occurred to me that any piece of music is so sacred that it is defiled by being in one. Really doesn't bother me.

Does that make me a mucical Philistine?

If it does that's two of us

Wasn't this board raving about how wonderful it was to hear Ernie K Doe on a Boots advert around Christmas time? Now it's a virtual offence that some other song is used on an advert.

I can't see a problem so maybe I should have gone to Specsavers.

I think that Specsavers ads are pushing pretty close to the mark all round. I didn`t like the one with the guy apparently in a mental institution much either.
