I've watched several awful displays - Brandi Carlile ruined Woodstock by over singing, losing the melody by doing Maria the Pariah vocal gymnastics, the band overplayed - dreadful. Yesterday Lewis Capaldi did songs all of which sounded the same - indeed, line by line copies and repeats, only the words changed, always including pain, healing, wounds, blood and misery.
It's "recapture the 60s and 70s (and sometimes 80s and 90s) but older, tired, out of tune, unable to reach high notes or putting them everywhere instead of only where they are meant to be".
Why? Because there is no mass appeal or crossover new music being made anymore.
A pudgy middle aged woman did a tragic non song called something like Angel in my Dreams with no tune, no lyrics, no appeal at all except the crowd seemed to know every word. I gather she was in something called Little Mix. I've never heard any Little Mix"music" and don't want to. I suspect they were one of the Simon Cowell outfits that emerged cleverly through TV and not through music, a bit like BTS (ditto - I have listened once to all BTS tracks and can't remember a note or a word - is it in English?).
I used to like The Script. Not anymore. Middle aged men trying to look like teenagers never works, like Dad Dancing. I loved Creedence Clearwater (went to San Fran; met Saul Zaentz) but John Fogerty with his dyed hair no longer has the voice.and don't you hate old people who wear neck scarves to hide their scraggy necks?
You'd think the strange BBC hosts would avoid comparing Proud Mary to Tina Turner's version as the notes were totally different but, hey, Tina sang the same notes as the Creedence original - it was just that Fogerty couldn't hit them anymore at 87 or whatever he is these days.
You can't compare the two versions as each have their own style. When Byrds covered Bob Dylan, Dylan was intrigued by their covers and said along the long the lines you can dance to my songs now.
Tina Turner version is a perfect cover to get a party started. I am biased as CCR are one of my favourite bands.
I do wonder if Keith Urban will dye his hair and get more surgery when he ages. He will look like Mickey Rourke. Old father time plays catch up with everyone.
Mcfly and Busted are pretty much middle aged men but still act like college students. Yuck.
I'll probably catch some today Sunday but BOY am I glad I didn't go! Every single "act" I saw and heard disappointed. Either too old and decrepit or too young and uninspired. Music since 1990 has become far too specialist and manufactured, appealing to thousands instead of millions.
Odd programming - the girlie bints in Rod's show do a white soul-less version of Tina's Proud Mary to illustrate how composer John Fogerty could no longer hit the high notes.
Many artists use lyrics/dirt sheets on gigs, and fans remember the lyrics more than the singer. John Lennon at Toronto used lyrics written on sheet of paper, Elton John has struggled remembering some lyrics, even Mike Nesmith in final years of touring failed to remember lyrics and notes, many of the Monkees songs were done by session staff, including the songs they wrote for themselves.
Neil Young has written and co-written well over a thousand songs.
Downing Street Cat hwrote: Bloody awful line up this year. If the dreadful Spice Girls do their reunion show next year? That will be the final nail in Glasto's coffin.
Download never gets it's the coverage it deserves. I guess because it's not woke and does not virtue signal.
For shits and giggles the Glastonbudget or the MKF Tribute Festival or Yorkshire based Trib Fest should be televised. I bet they will get more viewership than Glastonbury.
It's funny seeing borders and high fences at Glastonbury to keep riff raff out. Maybe Starmer could use that security team in Dover.
The Searchers were not filmed as the BBC couldn't get in the Acoustic Stage due to not having cameras in throughout the years. BBC have made it clear they don't old straight, white geezers.
As a metal head, The Searchers are one of my guilty pleasures. I hope The Seachers will release the soundboard recording offical and not on some dodgy bootleg.
I have seen superb various footage of numerous concerts by fans on Youtube even from the nose bleed seats.
In the 1980s and 1990s fans used to smuggle handcams in concerts to flog to record dealers. Some of the footage varied to almost excellent to very poor. What the BBC using some 1980s video cameras. I am sure they could have set up several cameras on tripods infront of a stage and let The Searchers do their thing. Almost everything is recorded digitally on small cameras.
Yes for me two of the most UNDER rated 60s bands were The Hollies and The Searchers. Both terrific - especially harmonies, influenced by the Everlys but British and unique.
I agree about the Hollies. Another Night is a beautiful album from their 1970s era.
I have no idea why they didn't put The Searchers on the main stage. If people moaned or tutted then tough. You can't please everyone but The Searchers are legends. Bad move BBC.
It wouldn't be acceptable for the bbc to show footage from handheld cameras on a mainstream channel, like the clip you showed. Apparently there are 107 stages at Glastonbury, they can't have full camera set-ups on all of them. The Searchers should have been on the second stage at least.
Talking of old white straight men. I think Rod Stewart couldn't optimise that category anymore, despite his fondness for wearing make-up in the 70s.
I am not talking about a mobile phone footage but the BBC could have done something for The Searchers. It's not hard. It wouldn't even have to be on the mainstream channel but via the iplayer.
I have never rated Rod Stewart, not even The Faces. Even Joe Meek couldn't stand Rod's voice. He was just lucky to meet John Long Baldry at the train station.
