Hi i recently read in a paper about the European Court of Human Rights taking up Jonathan's Case for appeal and i'm just wondering what happened with it as i've heard or read nothing since??

We're now in the waiting period which can be years and is always months.

They have a huge backlog and it takes ages for them to work through it all.

Whether or not depriving me of my right to discover and present a cast iron alibi is - I would have thought - pretty straightforward but then I was amazed when it happened during the trial. It strikes me as breaching the most basic human rights.

Lots of people win their appeals, but we hear very little about that in the media. Newspapers thrive on bad news and scandal. Plus, as you say, they don't want to have egg on their face. On the local level a man who lives near me had his conviction reported in banner headlines on the front page of the local rag, complete with photo. Recently he won his appeal, but I could find nothing about that in the paper. There was only a brief acknowledgement on local radio. Sad really.

I heard that already the fact the ECHR have accepted your application after having turned down a previous attempt is fairly extraordinary and bodes well for the result. Any truth in that?

Yes that is true - Ed Fitzgerald QC is very optimistic.

It is also felt that now it is in the hands of European judges they will be less available to be "influenced" by any dark forces.
