TOPIC: Eurovision 2008
#26394
Eurovision 2008 17 Years, 4 Months ago
So who's in charge? (Not me).
Who will be picking the finalists for the UK Entry?
Remember, my era produced Top Ten hits for Love City Groove and Precious, a global No1 for Gina G, a second placed Imaani and a winner for Katrina in 1997.
Some say it was the Golden Age for Britain in Eurovision.
Since then... nul points and other fiascos.

So what is happening in 2008?

Not sure who is handling Eurovision this year......

But Alex Roots and 'Don't Stop Looking' would be a perfect entry for the UK this year!!

Incidentally - the spies at the Beeb say Nicky Graham is handling the UK selection this year.
Good luck Nicky.

All I know is that the show will be aired on 1st March, the Executive Producer is Phil Parsons and the Producer Helen Tumbridge.

No announcements about the format or even the title of the show have been made yet. There haven't even been any rumours about the participants this time. It all seems very low key. We'll see.

My sources at the Beeb (very reliable and involved) say they are close to announcing details - the quest will be called Eurovision - Your Decision and look for specifics next week.

I think they would love me to be involved as much as I'd like to help but we both understand any assistance has to be totally unofficial!

So it's just advice, opinion and support!

With my limited Knowledge of Eurovision, since 2003, we have had barely any points and the songs have in a word been crap.

I believe Jessica Garlick came 2nd in 2002 and yes in the years that JK was helping choose the entry, I did think that Love City Groove, Gina G, Katrina and Imanni were good songs.

I do think their is a lot of bias voting especially in the Balkan countries, however, I do think that if we produced a good song we would do a lot better.

I also think that we haven't been a popular country amongst Europeans for years, so I guess the only way to test the theory is to put a decent entry in and see how the voting goes as I am not wholly convinced that it's all done to bias voting.

Valid points there, Mike, but I don't agree with any allegations of bias.

Thirteen different countries have won the last thirteen contests, including the UK. One of the things I love about the contest is that ANY country can win. You just need a great song, or at least the right type of song to persuade people to pick up their phones and vote. This has hardly occurred in the UK since the JK era.

I'm not a JK fan or supporter but he made such a difference to Eurovision. I remember in my teens it was all awful Samantha janus and micheal ball rubbish for the over 80s.

Then JK came with love city groove (great!) and gina g (even better) and won the lot with katrina and waves and suddenly eurovision was winning and cool and hits and young and fabulous.

the last 7-8 years have been so dire you feel nobody with any ears has been choosing our entries.

why not bring JK back? he's done his time and paid the price. i bet hed pick a winner again or at least a hit.
