Congratulations Chris Moyles at Radio One 17 Years, 4 Months ago
I was an early supporter years ago and he's one of the few DJ's who has openly described me as a friend after the fiasco of 2001.
But I have to say, whilst this is yet another deserved triumph for Chris, it's not good for music. There's very little of it in his shows. It's his personality that is gaining listeners.
Like my dear old mate Kenny Everett (who Chris worships), music is a secondary ingredient.
Same over at R2 with the excellent Wogan.
There's nowhere to listen for guaranteed, wonderful music.
Even the music based shows (like 6 and XFM) concentrate on new music whereas the best mix should only be great music, frequently old.
Specialist shows don't play great music. How can someone play Noel Coward after Akon, though both are splendid? Killers followed by Prince; Nickelback followed by Whitney? AC/DC then Leona Lewis? Who Let The Dogs Out and Rachmaninov?

And John Peel, whose absence becomes steadily more apparent with the passage of time.
When they did the Radio 2 40th anniversary Sunday a few months back they broadcast a Kenny Everett show from 1981. It should be used as a masterclass in how to be a DJ - timing, natural wit, technical brilliance - and he also had something useful to say about the plentiful quantity of music that he played. I can't remember anyone else on R2 playing "O Superman" (which KE evidently loved) at that time.
