Ok JK should be applauded because he often bangs on about how release dates are meaningless now and while i agree with him in principle in practice it cannot work until we have a radical approach to releasing music.

This is one that will suit the small guy because you're not likely to get playlisted unless you have a really amazing record (funny that's only ever required for the small guys and not usually the case for the Universals of this world).

I'm thinking about perhaps instead of a 12 week radio release (where the single is played in full on radio on monday and then on Limewire on Tuesday), how about a live tour or even a radio tour doing interviews, a live recording, a doco on the making of the video and any other content but the actual single.

During this stage advertise for the music to be pre-ordered either digitally or physically a la Radiohead.

Once it appears on iTunes at least all the pre-orders will ensure you get your money's worth, you then unleash it onto We7, Imeem and every ad sponsored site on the planet with as much fanfare as possible with the hope the customer will get it there instead of on Limewire.

At least you make your money first before the piracy kills you and you get the loose change from the ad-sponsored guys who aren't eating into sales and the sales on iTunes still trickles in.

Just a thought. I actually like this one and will try it out. But what do you guys think ?

My problem is with the concept of a "date"... radio use that as an excuse not to listen to anything other than "new releases", so do TV.

When I did No Limits you'd be astonished at the horror for my concept that we only played GOOD music - whether by dead artistes, old tracks, making our own videos if they were not available etc.

But what about release dates they howled.

Who cares when something is released or even made, I replied, it only mtters if it's good.

The result? No Limits topped the BBC2 ratings with 6 million viewers every week.

The public like good music. They don't care bout when it is released.

So gear up your promotion effort on that premise. Without retail shops today, online availability can be whenever you want it. My EARTH TO KING album has been available on Amazon and through iTunes for a year and is building very nicely thank you.
