"It's an odd country where a visit from Chris de Burgh could be a shot in the arm for rock". Why? 17 Years, 4 Months ago
That's the headline for the page on music in Iran in the Guardian.
But why? Chris has made some absolutely marvellous rock and pop - his Don't Pay The Ferryman is genius and my fave is Much More Than This (few have heard this LP track).
He has a terrific voice - very much in the Arabic/Persian category of emotion contained in the delivery.
It's about time we started praising Chris, not slagging him off.

My very first proper gig - ie in a venue that I paid to enter - was to see Horslips (anyone remember them?). Chris De Burgh opened with his acoustic guitar. This must have been in the very early days. We all thought he was naff, but then he was a support act and no-one had heard of him no matter how many times he told us that he had just come off a tour with (gasp) Supertramp.
