Seriously though, I think it's probably quite routine that the police would take out a care order while they establish the circumstances, though I'm not saying that time won't prove that you are right.

I've found an interseting article contrasting the media treatment of Shannon with Maddie, which I largely agree with.

Now I don't want this to turn into a "fattist" thread but it raises some interesting points.
No, I haven't been North of Watford for over 10 years and, to be serious, when I did go to a variety of towns and cities in the UK (for No Limits, for example) I was always delighted by the niceness, kindness, friendliness and charm of the people - but I also felt many were attractive and never noticed any weight problem or genetic flaws.

Likewise, I've seen loads of news reports on TV from the regions and never noticed this before.

But - how can I say it politely - this particular story seems to feature a very strange set of individuals - they almost look inbred. And I believe I heard information that Shannon's mother had something like 6 kids with 5 different fathers. I discarded that from my mind as impossible.

The last time I noticed a strangely similar physical aspect was when I did features in the USA on trailer park families. They too seemed over weight, porkine, dull.

Possibly the earlier point about food is significant. And in these days of easy access to fast food, even more so.

Are we witnessing the results of Jamie Oliver's spotted earlier turkey twizzler poisoning?

I believe its actually 7 children - by 5 different fathers. No wonder the police describe the family as "disfunctional" (I wonder how many Council houses they all have between them?)!

The "real" father has not seen Shannon since last summer (apparently) but of course as soon as the media turn-up he is giving interviews everywhere, and says he can't wait to be "re-united with his daughter".

This case could finally bury the lie (much promoted by the media who would like us to believe that there is an abuser on every street corner) - by showing that YET AGAIN when a child suffers harm, it is usually from a family member (and often as a result of the rest of the family neither knowing or caring where their offspring are).

The media had not forgotten or ignored Shannon's disappearance. BBC Leeds brought their news shows live from Dewsbury and had this as the main focus since she went missing. It didn't get much coverage on the national news, but there wasn't much to report and it's possible the news producers had learned lessons from the coverage of the Maddie affair. Plus there are major differences in circumstance. Maddie was very young and went missing in a strange country. Shannon was older and had told her friends she wanted to run away because she was unhappy at home.

For people in my region there has been media saturation of Shannon's case - newspapers, TV, radio - for the entire 24 days.

Those in the community celebrating the girl's reappearance were hopeful that her parents would return home on Saturday after the pair spent the night in a hotel.

Her 32-year-old mother and stepfather Craig Meehan, 22, looked tired and drawn as they left Dewsbury Police Station on Friday night.
