TOPIC: I want my pop back
#31524
I want my pop back 17 Years ago
There's a small story behind this one, as I wrote the English version (not on YT, alas) for a girl group called Indiana ("We Can Break Away"). This is Ambra Angiolini back in 1996 with "Aspettavo te" (I was waiting). She had loads of hits in Italy, Spain and Latin America and is now a noted actress in Italy. The sound is crappy in this vid, she's dressed all yukky - but what a chorus (written by Assolo/Magnanensi/Acqua - classic Italian pop). Why can't we have more this on the radio? I'd go for it. I want my pop back.

Cleaner sound here:

Very catchy chorus Mike; if I'd heard it on holiday I'd have written the English lyric myself (as I did for Gloria and Una Storia Importante and Questo Piccolo Grande Amore and....)

This shows the usefullness of this board to people that browse.
In all my years of writing, it had never once dawned on me to write an English lyric to a hit I hear on holiday, but then it is not always required. Joe Le Taxi would have translated very badly and lost it`s charms.
I find it fascinating what Michael does and I genuinely believe that our next Eurovision entry should not be sung in English.

Oh I've been the great specialist in acquiring Euro songs Mart and often doing the British lyric.

Michel Delpech loved my lyric for his Flirt and I think my words for his When I Was A Star are very effective, even today.

One of the most amazing radio moments I have ever heard was abroad in which they played the whole of Tenacious D`s "++++ her Gently" with no bleeps.
When you consider the lyrics of "Jet Boy Jet girl", which later became "Ca Plane Pour Moi", one is left staggered by how much may be lost in translation!
Scary stuff.

In the case of "Ca plane..." no one's complaining, the original was a hit in the US and the version has generated 100 times the revenue at least and keeps getting re-released - damn the thing. It was basically the same group of people, as Plastic Bertrand played the drums on "Jet Boy...".

In the case of Jet Boy many were probably relieved that the lyric was changed!
Never knew "Plastic" played drums on it though.
