TOPIC: Mamma Mia - delicious
#32512
Mamma Mia - delicious 17 Years ago
Wonderful feelgood happy film with the entire audience singing along with every word of every song, Meryl Streep magnificent, Dancing Queen fabulous, my favourite ever Abba song The Winner Takes It All a total triumph and Pierce Brosnan marvellously brave, considering he's quite aware he cannot sing at all.

And there's a nice subtle gay element.

Probably the smash of the year in my opinion.

Can't with really any of that post JK.At a press showing 10 days or so ago , it was derided by nearly all. The Dark Knight will be the Summer blockbuster.

The trailer for Dark Knight looks great and I suspect WALL-E will do terrific business but Mamma Mia is fantastic - the critics are wrong...

LONDON (Reuters) - Abba-themed musical "Mamma Mia!" topped the box office after its opening three days, knocking Will Smith off the No.1 spot after just a week, according to Screen International on Tuesday.

With Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Julie Walters belting out all the old anthems, the film of the musical of the group took a healthy 5.2 million pounds.

Cannot wait to see the Batman Movie. They're already raving about Heath Ledger's performance. Even mention of an honourary Oscar?

You are right JK ;the economic climate, and mostly the weather too, demand a happy frothy piece of rubbish right now and Mamma Mia fits the bill very nicely. The Gay undertone helps as well, but good cinema it certainly is not.

The Dark Knight on the other hand is a masterly piece of film making with a brilliant cast , wonderful visual flair and a truly extraodinary ending. See it.

Heath Ledger doesn't need an honourary Oscar. Like Peter Finch in NETWORK, he simply receives it post-humously.

The very same, JK , and one of the seminal US films of the 70's with Bill Holden , Robert Duvall, Ned Beatty and a rampant Faye Dunaway munching up the scenery.

I'm older than I look Walter.
Peter's son Charles negotiated at length to buy the film rights to my novel Bible Two.

I got so fed up with all the druggy meetings (it was in the early 80s when bowls of white powder sat on board room tables) that I walked out of the ninth meeting because I couldn't stand the rubbish being talked.

A few months later a film called Mannequin was made by the same studio with a very similar plot and even the same hero's name (Jonathan).

I never made a penny.

I was madder than hell and I wasn't going to take any more.

Dear God, JK, you do get involved with some odd and horrible stuff!!
That was a real shocker!
Kim Cattrall in an early man-eating role and more chewing of scenery.
Best known for Starship's "Nothing gonna stop us now", co-written by Diane Warren. The cheesy video is still up on You tube.

Now stop, I have a column to write.....

Yes Walter - there are some who believe I'm just full of bullshit but the truth in my extraordinary life has been far more fascinating than anything anyone could ever make up.

There's nothing to stop Mamma Mia being great fun at the same time as Dark Knight being "masterly". Why not see both?

Don't let snobs get in the way of a giggle (or a man in tights).

I agree Mike and see no reason why both should not be in my top 5 films of the year (if Dark Knight lives up to the trailer).

Maybe not Walter, but my grammar, style and punctuation spotting far exceeds my writing skills.
