The boy band gets older and starts really looking crumbly.
"One gene more = mongoloid" Tom is we gather the talent in the writing department but the skills seem to be failing - One For The Radio is a hotchpotch of old 60s gimmicks and a missing melody. And his chin gets bigger.
Danny (wasn't he the cute one?) is ageing badly and seems to be chewing his fingernails on his increasingly stubby fingers.
Dougie (who was cute) is very lager loutish. And in the "I don't need to shave to prove I'm a man" period men in their 20s favour.
And the elderly drummer seems to be in his thirties.
Desperately the record company is pulling all the old marketing tricks to make it seem like the band still appeal but the little girls are all married/pregnant/mums and have moved on (plus even the most loyal fans need the cash for other things).
End of McFly... just as the label shrieks "they are number one" (by the way, wasn't this a bulk marketing ploy with one retail chain?).
Thoughts?
By the way, whatever happened to Busted (other than TV reality)?
Maybe McFly should follow the lead of Take That and have a few years off before making a comeback as more mature performers. It won't work for everyone. Take That had good material.
On the other hand, maybe they just need to adapt, as per Cliff and the Bee Gees who kept their original fans and gained new ones from new generations.
The key thing is depth of talent. I'm not sure that McFly have what it takes. I'm also not sure that a Number One single proves much today. As with many others, time will tell. I hope they've saved or invested some of their money; they might need it fall back on in the future.
McFly's appearance on This Morning (ITV) was quite good PR. Quite impressed with their attitude, travelling budget class so that they could put more money into their album. They formed their own label and so have no major backing, and it's a bit like starting over again. Their new CD will be free with a Sunday paper, which seems to be a popular trend these days, but they are also putting a lot of effort into live events.
Unfortunately their current single lacks originality. If it wasn't by McFly it would probably pass by un-noticed.
I beg to differ JK. The boys still look good and kudos to them for getting to number one. It seems like when the majors do this sort of thing it's clever marketing but when anyone else does it, eyebrows are raised. Don't really care too much about the music but I can assure you many records have been bought by fans in similar circumstances. I for one have bought the 7 inch of a single only to buy the 12 inch because the 7 inch didn't have the mix I wanted. Get over it folks. All the negative talk smacks of sour grapes.
I think it`s a difficult time for them to be fair.
They are not a teen band anymore, but not old enough to be Take That, but the money of course still needs to be ticked over, as do as many boxes as possible.
A difficult milestone in a career that I think has been handled pretty correctly in this climate.
I don`t think the band will ever quit, but I think they may "rest" after the current exposures and then come back and blow everyone away.
There is a heckuva lot of natural talent in that band.
Any musician who have attempted to play "Don`t Stop me Know", will know how hard it is to get a band to gel on that tune, let alone scale the heights of the vocals.
I think maybe there day has been and gone, they do one sound very good but i don't beleave that it's what the kid's are wanting now,
maybe a few years off, they will come back with something fresh and not re-hashing what they have done in the past and i think what they did in the past i.e song writing wise was better.
What they look like i don't think is the problem, young girls will like them as well as there mothers,P
I don't agree with JK on this one. I love Mcfly and find their music infinitely more enjoyable than a lot of the dreary music out there at the moment. I hasten to add I am not a teenager or a mother of a fan and i do not fancy any of the band members. I just love the music. I hope they can produce a few more albums before they fizzle out.
BTW the last I heard of Busted was that the keyboard player wrote the tune to Space Pirates, a tune which is often stuck in my head.
I'm not against McFly; in fact I thought they filled their niche pretty well; this was just a comment on the frequently sad aspect of a certain type of artiste trying to adapt when their talents were predominantly tied to youth.
