Mail On Sunday to be prosecuted for lying? 17 Years ago
They advertised the McFly album yesterday by saying it included their "No 1 single One For The Radio".

It WAS No1 in the midweeks but failed in the final - Dizzee stayed there.

Long prison sentence for Paul Dacre and Peter Wright?

No they will just say it was No1 in the McFly fan chart compiled by McFly.

Arguably they were right so no legal action here lol. They will just say, it was number 1 in the midweeks. By the way why do you have a downer on the band ? Number 2 in its first week is still a great result no matter what. So what it was marketing. Perm any 3 from 10 and they were all "hyped" to some extent, notably due to the undue influence the majors have over radio.

Actually what entertained me most about the album, was the bands attitude that they appeared (in interview) to want to create their own independent sound this time around.

Cracking it is, but errm, no they didn`t !
They just made another Mcfly record!

Don`t you just love artistic integrity and the interpretation of such?

Technically this is their own 'independant' sound as they are no longer signed to a major label. Ok, that's kinda playing with words a bit, but they could have meant that.

I'm not a fan of McFly, but I would had a listen to the free CD if it hadn't meant having to buy The Sunday Mail. I wouldn't give a penny to that rag, so I'll wait until I find someone who's got a copy and borrow it.

I've got nothing against them - I think they have had some decent pop (by the way, whatever happened to James who I thought was the talent in Busted?).

I've not yet listened to this album (prompted by Mart).

But somehow there's nothing sadder than boy (or girl) bands which succeed due to youthful charm and energy, trying to adapt to middle age.

Take That have done it (due to Gary's songwriting ability).
Robbie sort-of managed it (due to JF and Guy).

But most fall by the wayside, become wives or husbands, get wrinkles, sag and never had much musical skill in the first place.

Which, like Dorian Gray, is depressing.

Actually, now that is a more interesting comment than you would think.
Take That, grew up and aged gracefully with their music, I hate to say it, but McFly have not.

Take That were doing a kind of updated MOR from the get-go with the Barry Manilow/Bee Gee covers and suchlike. And Barlow was a middle-aged 24 year old. McFly might have been aiming at a similar market but took their musical cues from punk pop/power pop with bands like Jellyfish/Green Day etc as their influences. It's a lot harder to move from there to the broader appeal.
I felt a bit ill buying the Mail yesterday - but good luck to the lads, some of their tunes are ok.My only quibble would be it says on the back of the CD that a 'deluxe' version will be out in September with 4 more tracks ie - that isn't the actual album but a SAMPLER. (albeit a large one)

I feel quite ill buying the Mail most days, but one does have to say the layout is addictive.
Just don`t start believing the editorials.

Interesting to note that both Robbie and Take That made beautiful MOR music. I think for a long term strategy, artists need to invest in this genre as early as possible. MOR music last forever and delivers longterm results methinks.

I agree that MOR has lasting appeal, but I also think that a band needs it's own distinctive sound for lasting success. McFly don't really stand out much from various other bands of their genre. Well done to them for maintaining some kind of following despite that, but will they or their songs still be in the minds of music fans in ten years time? That is the big test.
