I've noticed a real dearth of tips for new acts 16 Years, 9 Months ago
Not just here but on other music boards too.

And I'm afraid those that ARE getting tipped are derivative and ordinary.

The CLASSICS thread here has had over 5000 views and loads of comments.

Did we make all the good music in the 60s, 70s and 80s?

Have we run out of ideas?

Do today's young simply copy us?

I think that the Mail has a lot of influence on the sudden 80`s resurgence this week.

This could have an interesting knock on effect to young bands if they listen to some of this stuff that comes with the papers.

`80s sounds in new acts? very possibly.

I'll tip this week's Fab Chart No.1 Jillian Goldin. I went to her website and listened to her other tracks. Of course, a lot depends on what type of music you are into. I like the way she blends near classical vocal with modern techno to create a fresh kind of New Age sound. She has a wonderful voice.

Thanks to the Fab Chart for bringing her into the light.

MINUS IQ are a new band with a great authentic 80s vibe about them.

Well worth checking out ( includes the son of a very famous 80s star as well ! )

They have an album in the pipeline I believe and an indie deal.

Could cash in on this 80s revival.

Barfly have launched a Glamtastic New Romantic Club called HEROES ( see www.barflyclub.com ) each month at THE FLY featuring bands like MINUS IQ.

So I think the 80s is the future ( for the time being ! )

I think because everyone is trying to reinvent the wheel. For the first time music is going backwards in a big way. There were always acts that were retro but as far as rock is concerned there has been nothing new since the late 70s. The 80s and 90s were both creative decades because of new technology. Now all the toys seem to be making music from the past, creativity waned. Thankfully the 80s revival and the electro revival is just the beginnning of something new.

Here's something for a giggle: Fatima Spar. I don't know much about her/them. But the sound is pretty popular at a grassroots level, a kind of jazzy swing with klezmer or Balkan touches. I've seen a few groups like this in France and Belgium over the past few years. Good fun.

By the way, why has nobody tipped Roots Maunva?

Definitely the best thing I've heard from the UK in ages. Play loud. Check "Again & Again". This restores my faith in British music: hard, slow, gritty, sneakily reggae with a hip-hop vibe.

Play loud and do nah bodda me.

Because he's not a new act. Any sod can tip an established act.

I'll put it another way, then. He could well be a good export, but don't see him mentioned outside the UK (I heard him on BBC World Service of all places, I think).

Can you tip anyone else in the genre that is less established, SW?

The 80's influence is all over the London gig scene, and by that I mean the unsigned scene. I see at least 4 bands a week in venues all over London and the 80's vibe is there in both the fashion of teens and within the music of many of the bands I see.

On a completely different level and harking back to the 50's and 60's check out:

The Jim Jones Revue
www.myspace.com/thejimjonesrevue

And for something very different from this, check out the pop swing of:

Belle Humble
www.myspace.com/bellehumble

And finally, and not exactly new but still unsigned:
Mumford and Sons
www.myspace.com/mumfordandsons
Specifically White Blank Page

More to come from me very soon....

Yes I can...

myspace.com/stigdastardly

Isn't it a bit important to see whether an act you're tipping have actually acheived some mainstream success? It's easy enough to Google and saves you looking like a fool.

Come on people, there are some SERIOUSLY out of touch people posting on this board who seem unaware of what's going on. Tipster G is the only one who seems to have a clue. If the rest of you work in the industry (and I reckon you're not, or are on the outside looking in), shame on you for being so detached.

Another tip and unashamedly 80s is a girl group called Red Blooded Women. I feel that they're almost a bit too of the moment which makes them seem calculated, but they have some cracking songs.

myspace.com/redbloodedwomenmusic

I'm waiting for the inevitable tip of the dire Matthew Bennett Band...again...

Thanks for the tips SW but I reiterate - ANYTHING Tipsters love is fine by me in the tipping department. Old, new, established, obscure, Googled or oodled.

I have to say, having just returned from North Africa, nobody new can touch Michael Jackson in the fan stakes. Kids wear his hats, do his dance moves on the street, radio plays his old hits...

Not any new stuff (is there any?) but the old hits still reach millions more than any current acts.

And I finally got to see Mamma Mia as a movie. Every other songwriter in the pop world (I'm being specific) seems so irrelevant. It reminds me of what we should be aiming for.

I'd sooner drill holes into my eye sockets than watch that film.

Can't knock those Abba songs...even when paraphrased (i.e. nicked) a la Steps, they still sound great.
