Peter Kay chart star... 16 Years, 8 Months ago
I must say, if only for that magnificent, tongue-in-cheek Mandela to Umbrella musical link - which said about a dozen things in one syllable - Kay deserves praise and glory.

Geraldine just missed out on the No1 with, I gather, 40,000 sales.

40,000??!! I did that in one day in the 60s.

So music is selling one seventh of what it was in 1965.

And at 79p a time, that is chickenfeed.

How much did singles cost in the 60s?

If I remember it correctly, in the mid-70s chart-singles were 75 pence. The price reached one pound around 1980?

But there were records shops (almost) on any corner where you could buy used and promo copies for less.

From the BBC

It looks like it's based on 1965 to 1968

...7" Singles 45 rpm were 6s/8d = 33p
12" Albums 33 1/3 rpm were 32s/6d =

Actually guys, this is a confusingly split thread between 2 subjects, this is worth pointing out for the casual reader, which does happen at the weekends.
