Rumours that it's been scrapped.

Wankers.

I'd produce a smash show with massive ratings combining great and rare footage from the past with huge hits from this year (like Take A Bow) and a positive, exciting look at 2009...

It would get 13.7 million viewers just before Her Majesty...

King followed by Queen on BBC1?

Not a fucking chance. Programmers are FAR more concerned with tabloid editor headlines than producing quality viewing and who can blame them? Morons always fear bullies.

I have the full 1973 Christmas TOTP on video. Great fun. Wonderful party atmosphere.

Must admit I haven't watched the Christmas edition for several years due to a mix of clueless presenters and poor quality chart music.

For me, Jools Holland's Hootenanny has been the main seasonal music show on TV in recent years.

That is the second most disgusting "Anti Music by the BBC" decision ,that I have heard all year.

We are heading towards a no think no listen situation and still have to pay a fee for it.

This is a kick in the bollocks for a great many people. Recently there has been increased demand for the BBC to bring back TOTP and I guess this is their pathetic response.

So, the BBC think it's cool to waste airtime with mindless repeats - does Jonathan Ross and Little Britain to name two shows HAVE to be repeated within a day or two? Then there's all the spam... the brain dead daytime TV crap, Strictly 7 days a week, Eggheads and all the spin offs.

I am boycotting the TV Licence when my current one runs out because I don't see why I should have to pay for tons of crap TV when the BBC can't be arsed to listen to its viewers.

Killing off TOTP in the first place was the BBC's worst mistake of this decade. If anything, in the times we are going through, we need it more than ever.

If anyone could resurrect TOTP and make it cool, it's JK, but the BBC won't dare consider that.

WANKERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The worst decision by the BBC in their history.

Lets hope the public respond by threatening to withold the license fee until it is restored.

What next ? The Queen's Speech ?

Or replacing the whole day with Labour Party Broadcasts because we must not offend anyone by celebrating Christmas.

This country is down the dumper. It is finished. It is an ex Country.

So annoyed I want to scream AAAAAAAGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

I wasn't going to post this because I dare say some will take it wrongly. But .. the last good presenter of Top Of The Pops was Gary Glitter. Regardless of people's opinions of his personal life you cannot deny that he is a true showman.

The later years of Top Of The Pops were plagued by very low ratings, so I guess the viewers voted with the remote. If they were to bring it back it would have to be much improved in order to achieve the desired ratings.

I believe the BBC decided to kill the show off over a period of time by replacing Chris Cowey - who did well with the show - with ex Childrens TV presenter Andi Peters in the producers chair. I don't think he had much production experience being more at home in front of the cameras usually with Ed the Duck. Under his production, the viewing figures soon began to drop since he didn't really have a clue, making some bad and ill advised changes to the format where it felt more like a kids TV show and forgetting it should appeal to people of all ages.

So with falling figures thanks to the worst producer in the shows history, the BBC took the show out of Peters' hands and then switched it to the Sunday evening slot on BBC2... and that was it... in that spot, it lost even more viewers to the point the BBC then turned round with a "valid" excuse to kill off the show. You could see it coming, so I believe it was carefully orchestrated over a 3 to 4 year period.

And that, I believe is how TOTP was killed off.

I thought Top Of The Pops began to die when the link with Radio One was broken. Radio One also began to die around that time. Pop culture changed. When I was a child/teen I would never miss Top Of The Pops, but none of my children even gave it a glance. They have 24/7 music channels, and the internet. They never listen to Radio One. I think it's us oldies who wish to return to a day which has long passed.

On Andy Peters, I agree he was a terrible choice for the show. I think he had been producer of the Saturday morning live kids show (Live and Kicking?) but Top Of The Pops neeeded someone special to keep it alive. The BBC seemed to have put the emphasis on involving youth rather than experience. Not always the best move.

I cannot imagine slaving over a Christmas dinner since early morning, meeting my family for dinner and not putting Xmas TOTP on the telly.

This is dreadful. What will we supposed to watching instead, the "Best of X Factor" no doubt.

Bloody crap, do not pay your fees then thay can bag us all in jail, which is a jail which the Beeb are attempting to put us into anyway.

"U VILL VATCH ZIS!!!"

TV used to have so many Pop shows. TOTP was the main one for me but I also used to make a point of watching Lift Off, 45, Supersonic, Get it Together, Marc, The Arrows - and do you remember The Roxy?

Before those there were Six Five Special, Ready Steady Go, Oh Boy, etc.

Today we have virtually no Pop shows on TV - outside of the music channels. Shame really.

Exactly. We have a rich heritage of music TV shows and now we have virtually nothing. Later With Jools is elitist fodder that is bland, predictable and boring.

Don't forget even in the 80s you had TOTP, No Limits, Razzmatazz, The Tube, The Roxy. Whistle Test... even Cheggers Plays Pop! Remember those BBC2 all nighters as well?

It disturbs me that the best the BBC can come up with is the hateful TOTP2 with the same old clips we've yawned at dozens of times with smug obnoxious Steve Wright voiceovers and dumb trivial captions all designed to annoy. It's all very well celebrating the Ghosts of Christmas past, but what about those of the present... and the future?

All this chat reminds of the excitement of looking forward to TOTP the afternoon following Noels Christmas Gifts. Another great show. Sorry to digress.

Pete Samson of The Sun being one of many Wapping fans and readers of this board spotted this story early Monday morning, wrote it up for the Bizarre page and ran it yesterday and today - JK, you may not write Bizarre directly any more (or get paid for it) but the Tipsheet is still the top source for stories.
