The Record Of The Year 2008
The most admired and desired music prize arrives again.

Last year Leona Lewis won the prestigious title with Bleeding Love and well over a million votes were cast online.
In 2006 Take That won with Patience.
In the very first year, 1998, Boyzone won with No Matter What and the show had over 9.7 million viewers on ITV.
This year all ten finalists have sold over 300,000 copies in the UK alone.
Votes over the next three weeks are on www.roty.tv and the winner will be announced on December 14th.

This is great. Can you imagine how good a TV show this lineup would be? Are BBC and ITV mad? Such a guaranteed 10 million viewer delivery at this time of year and they don't show it. Are they mad?

I vote for Mercy and Duffy as Record of the Year.

In truth none of the songs on the list inspire me and I would not tune in to watch the show, but I'm just one out of several million.

Incidentally, the comments on Velvet Rope are going in this direction. Looks like another event that will not be exported.

The Rope reflects the passion for music we all have - nobody likes everything and the opposite of HATE (Hero?) is LOVE (Coldplay? Rihanna? Duffy?).

My "Record of the Year" has never been in the list - over 11 years.

But the format is very populist and simple and, I would say, makes amazing television, just as viewer friendly as The X Factor but far, far better for music generally.

Votes starting to pour in now; after Nickelback leading the field, Duffy (which I think should win) is in the lead followed by Katy Perry, then Nickelback, Coldplay (my second fave) and Rihanna (my fave).

I'd like to see Basshunter do better (a great dance track), also Adele.

And I'm delighted to see Hero lagging behind.
