I absolutely LOVE Alma Cogan! She would indeed had been a national treasure had she lived. Saddest thing was, she was continually getting better and the last couple of years worth of recordings she made are truly brilliant. Her collaboration with Andrew Oldham was superb, as was the one she did with Chris Curtis. For my money with her emotional renditions of "Eight Days A Week" and "Yesterday" - recorded with John and Paul in attendance cheering her on - are the best Beatles covers ever and for me beat The Beatles versions hands down!
She was truly unique and it is sad there is nobody remotely like her around today. Whenever you see or hear her, you cannot help but smile. And when you look at the sort of people who get headlines and plaudits today, that is one huge loss.
Yep... the late Chris Crummy (for that was his real name).
He produced a one off single for her in mid 1965 called "Snakes and Snails" and a great rocking track it is too. Unfortunately, Keith Richard(s) reviewed it at the time and slated it saying it was the worst pop record he'd ever heard! Curtis also can be prominently heard doing backing vocals on it. Should had been a hit but sadly, it wasn't.
