Wonderful 78rpm leather bound classics 16 Years, 3 Months ago
Going through my Mum's house we find this huge collection of, I think, first ever recordings of classical works in individual gold embossed leather bindings for every great composer - Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Wagner - the lot (including my personal favourite Rachmaninov)... auctioneers say worth nothing these days but I cannot believe these spotless gems (never been played I suspect) are not cherished by collectors.

Sadly, and inexplicably considering how beautifully crafted these sets were, and how HEAVY they are, they're virtually worthless. I see them all the time in junk stores, charity shops, car boot sales etc and they virtually cannot give them away.
Best advice is to try and see if you can get them all valued anyway because there is always the off chance there might be one set that is a sought after rarity... there are some collectors out there, but not many. And can you imagine the postage costs if you sold them on eBay? The postage would cost far more than the final sale price of the item!
The big money for 78's generally go for those issued between 1958 and 1960 as the 45 took over. I believe some early Cliff Richard 78's are near impossible to find (because the 45's outsold them) and that is the case with various pop and rock and roll 78's from the final years they were produced.

Yes sadly 78s are fairly undesirable unless it's the rock n roll era of 1959/1960 and then they can be very hard to find and highly collectible. I got some Billy Fury 78s from my mum's collection and those are good examples.
